spraying rear bushings on 940 wagon?? 900

Wondering if this makes sense to any of you mechanics ...

1993 940 base wagon, 190000 miles

On cold (45degree) days, the rear end makes a "squonk-enk" noise, like the sound of someone rubbing an inflated balloon with their hand.

I called the mechanic who cared for this car for the last 10 years, and she said probably rear bushings, and suggested spraying all of them with penetrating lube.

Have any of you done that, and did it help?

No dealer or Volvo specialists within 60 miles, so I'm doing the DIY gig. I didn't realize the rear end had so many bushings ....

Thanks.

If do this: the bushings are designed to sit in the arms very tightly (most are pressed in using hydraulic rams) so penetrating lube will interfere with this press fit in the arms. If you want to spray just the shaft that goes into the bushing, OK, but don't get any lube on the outer area.

Good tip ...

The parts stores sell penetrating oil, but the cans say "be careful when using on rubber" or something like that.
Are the rear suspension bushings on a 93 940 wagon made from urethane, rubber, or what?

Or should I just use silicone spray and hope it penetrates?

Thanks again.

They are rubber, likely EPDM. Spray with silicone if you use anything.

Noises are always hard to describe of course...:)
Also check your shocks. Sometimes the outer shell will rub against the inner, making similar noises. A little grease and it's taken care of. Had it on my car...put some grease up there but eventually I'll replace them.

About the bushings, I know not much.
God Bless,
Koos
