I have a 68 122S with m41 and J type od it has severe gear whine in 3rd gear, just wonering if anybody has had same issue and what was the fix? Overhaul complete, just bearing or? any help is appreciated. I'm a new guy here so bear with me , Thanks

Geez... a tear down/rebuild for a 3rd gear whine? Hell.. it's probably got another 100k miles before it breaks...

Me? I'd first check the boot around the shifter.. make sure there's no hole.

Second, change your tranny fluid. I don't want to get into weights and types. But, I like straight 40 weight, dino, non detergent.

Third.. skip third. That is to say, shift from second to fourth, and use third gear only when necessary.. just rev 'er up a bit more in second. Second gear should be fine well past 35mph, and fourth is fine from 25mph.. third is optional.

I sure wouldn't go through the cost and time, and possibility of messing something up in surgery over a little whine.

Not that third gear can't go but here's how I "fixed" the first Volvo I owned that I thought needed a transmission due to excessive noise in third--at the suggestion of my Volvo trained Danish friend--look over the shift boot carefully. A small split at the back of the boot (where it is always folded when in 4th) can let in all the noise from a transmission (and they are noisy without a boot) when that section is stretched with the shifter in 3rd. Dave, Thanks I'll definitley check that first, thats a possibility, could be the boot isnt secure to the floor or under the center heat duct.

The D type in my '67 has a whine too, and only in 3rd as well. I's not overly annoying for the amount of time I spend in 3rd so I don't intend to do anything until either I have the engine out for other reasons or there are some performance symptoms.

Hi,
If it was the bearings you would hear noise in every gear and at idle.
Third gear does go..
Take it apart and look at it. You will be able to tell.
If you replace just the third gear and not the lay gear you may still have noise.
It good to refer to the Greeen and Haynes manual and the Vclassics website.
Replacement parts are available online.
I rebuilt mine over thirty years ago (very noisy ...chipped some of the gears) and it is still going strong.

I can't. I can hear them in 1st, 2nd and 3rd.

If they are very bad he probably can, depending on which bearings are bad.

Yeah.
Low or no oil can cause lots of problems. Not having good seals...
A perpetual leak that someone forgot to top off...
Is it the engine? Is it the trans?
Those pesky speedo drive seals...

Having a clean underside is a good place to start.

I don't know about the Haynes 120 manual but I do know that the Haynes 140 manual has a great M41 rebuild pictorial step by step guide that is not in the green book. The M41 rebuild info on the VClassics website improves whats found in the Hayes. The Haynes 240 manual has some good info as well.

Thanks, do you know of a specific place to get gears etc? Ill definitley check it all when its apart I've done quit a few Muncie 4 speeds so I think I'll be ok, also where can I get the the green book? Thanks again
