Am I damaging my catalytic converter? 200 1988

1988 245A: I barely passed my smog test because of high Nox readings. Probably won't pass the next time. Research on this forum took me to the exhaust manifold side of the car to look for outside air entering the exhaust system. At idle I can hear what sounds like an exhaust leak in the area of the exhaust manifold. Will be checking for bad gaskets, crack in exhaust manifold.

In addition I am planning to clean the throttle body using CRC Clean R Carb and will check the corrugated hose for cracks. Heck, time to clean the flame trap too.

QUESTION: If outside air IS entering at the exhaust manifold, will it shorten the life, am I damaging my catalytic converter?
