Help me diagnose this bizarre problem with my 740 losing power 700

Hello,

I have a 1991 740T that I bought earlier this year and I've had a problem with the car losing power and sputtering along the road as I am driving. If I step down on the accelerator hard, it will sputter badly, if I ease into it, I can get the car moving a bit until I have a chance to pull over because if I turn the car off, then turn it back on, the car will resume as normal. I've been trying to troubleshoot this problem for awhile now and I noticed that the problem starts to occur after I make turns, or if I am driving along a curvy road. What do you think the problem could be?!

Carefully inspect the hoses in the intercooler system. They can develop small leaks that only become evident under boost that will produce the problem you are describing. There are instructions for pressurizing the intercooler to find these leaks. The other approach is to remove the hoses and inspect them carefully-- the usual problem is oil that blows through the turbo softening the hoses.

    Good luck!

My 1991 745 Turbo was showing exactly the same symptoms when the little fuel lift pump in the tank was failing. Is your main fuel pump, under the frame rail, under the driver's seat, making more noise than usual at times?

Hi, if by losing power or sputtering you feel like it is running out of gas, try to pull then push your fuel pump relay, it could be loose. Better yet try a new fuel pump relay. I had the same problem you just described and it was the relay. Hope this helps.
