Dear ohsotired,
May this find you well. You definitely can put seats from a 96 or 970 960 into a 1993 940. I've done this. Note, though, that the passenger seat from a 960 will be a powered seat. See the FAQs, for installing a powered passenger seat, in a car that did not come so equipped.
The seats from 1996 and 1997 960s will have a built-in side-impact airbag. This unit does not require any electrical supply. However, the initiator is in the side of the seat, so before handling the seat, be sure to insert the plastic safety device, found in the seat switch holder.
Further if you want to have the benefit of side-impact airbag, you'll have to remove from inside the donor car's doors, the white plastic "block", that serves as a "striker", and install it in the door of your 940. To do this, you will need to drill one hole in the door's internal sheet metal.
If you install the side airbag striker block, be advised that the windows will no longer to down fully. The window glass will stick up 1/2" above the level of the gasket as the top of the door. In most cases, this is not troublesome (unless you like to hang your arm out of the window opening, which is an unsafe practice).
Hope this helps.
Yours faithfully,
Spook
