940 seat swap 900

I need to swap out my front seats on my 93 940.
Does anyone know how new i can get with the seats, and still be a direct fit? Will S90 seats fit? Will seats from a 96 960 fit?

Thanks.

Dear ohsotired,

May this find you well. You definitely can put seats from a 96 or 970 960 into a 1993 940. I've done this. Note, though, that the passenger seat from a 960 will be a powered seat. See the FAQs, for installing a powered passenger seat, in a car that did not come so equipped.

The seats from 1996 and 1997 960s will have a built-in side-impact airbag. This unit does not require any electrical supply. However, the initiator is in the side of the seat, so before handling the seat, be sure to insert the plastic safety device, found in the seat switch holder.

Further if you want to have the benefit of side-impact airbag, you'll have to remove from inside the donor car's doors, the white plastic "block", that serves as a "striker", and install it in the door of your 940. To do this, you will need to drill one hole in the door's internal sheet metal.

If you install the side airbag striker block, be advised that the windows will no longer to down fully. The window glass will stick up 1/2" above the level of the gasket as the top of the door. In most cases, this is not troublesome (unless you like to hang your arm out of the window opening, which is an unsafe practice).

Hope this helps.

Yours faithfully,

Spook

Wow, I would really like my car to have SIPS. I guess I am looking for seats from a 97 960.

Thanks a lot for the info Spook.

Dear Ohsotired,

May this find you well. I believe SIPS were also standard in 1996 960s.

Please note the following:

DEATH DANGER WARNING: Before trying to remove the driver's seat, remove the negative battery cable clamp from the battery terminal, and put the clamp in a plastic bag, to isolate it. This cuts power supply to the SRS (Airbag) System. The airbag sensor is under the driver's seat, affixed to the floor pan. If this sensor is banged - if you drop the seat on it, or drop a tool on it - the airbag could deploy. This can be lethal, at close quarters.

Hope this helps.

Yours faithfully,

Spook

Can't say for absolutely sure, but my 740 wagon has electric seats from a 780 coupe, so there certainly is plenty of interchangeability! Since the basic chassis platform is the same on 700/900 cars you should be OK.
