B18A/B20A single-carb manifold search 120-130

Hi all --
I'm looking for a stock single carb setup to use on a special B18 powered project where the hood clearances will not allow for the normal dual SU/Stromberg setup or a Weber kit.

What cars did single-carbs origininally come on? I've heard they were installed on the Amazon Canadian and the 121 models, primarily in Europe -- true? What year span? Someone's even reported they came on a B20 140?

Did they all use the Stromberg CD carb....150 or 175? Did a single-carb SU HS6 setup exist?

If you have one of these gathering dust, please let me know.

    Hi,

I wondered if you ever found a manifold. I have a earlier B18a manifold with a Zenith on it. It came off my Volvo military transport. I switched to a Aluminum intake and Weber. I can email you photos. It has the old oil bath filter, etc. I'm in CA.

    Just checking,

    Marc

    B18A/B20A single-carb manifold search 120-130

I've had an Amazon for years, but this new project is actually a vintage Volvo boat --- It was originally equipped with a B16 block (BB90, single upright Zenith) and was repowered (by p.o.) with a B18 block (AQ110, dual upright Zenith). The boat's engine cover now will not clear the dual carb fuel inlet ports as they extend too far away from the block...only a centrally mounted single-carb setup will fit.

The Weber hangs waaay out there -- won't work. I can use a B18 single upright Zenith manifold (even though this will result in a guaranteed 15hp loss). I'd probably prefer to try a single Stromberg or SU as found on the automotive B20A and perhaps on some late 1960s marine Volvo (most had dual carbs). I'll have to experiment with needle tapers, but that's OK.

Note: Due to marine exhaust differences, I can only use a solo intake manifold (or one that's been cut away from exhaust).

Anyone have a candidate in their hoard pile? What would be easiest to find?

      Here's one! 120-130

I emailed to find out what the shipping would be and he replied 46 euros. Might be a way to go, as the price right now is only 1 euro.

I just re-read your post. I'm not clear if you can use this - it's a combo, single intake/dual exhaust. I think this originally was fitted with a stromberg. Didn't realize that what you were looking for was for a boat!

Well, it's nice to see one up close, thanks. I did say they were common in Europe....but oi, the shipping! Also, I can't use a combination manifold due to marine exhaust being different.

What years might have had a single-carb solo (non-combo) intake manifold?

        Still looking....

Thanks for the pointer. I may bid myself. I've been wanting one of these to try and improve my fuel economy. I've got spare SUs and Strombergs to work with already.

Shipping is really high - I wonder if there is anything closer?

The Zenith is harder to find in good order than a Stromberg or an SU, I'm 99% sure I have both manifolds. If I wanted a single carb I'd probably use the Stromberg manifold and fit it with a new single SU HIF6

It would be interesting to know what the project is so that it's easier to make suggestions. No problem to find them in Europe except for the fact that many just get scrapped in favour of a 2 carb one. Height wise there's very little difference between a 1 and 2 carb set up on a B20a/B20b. The Strombergs being a little lower profile than the SU's. Late B18a changed to a Stromberg from the higher(with standard filter) vertical Zenith.

There were 2 versions of the B18A, the early ones came with a downdraught Zenith, then in 1965/66 they changed to a single Stromberg. That basic manifold was used on the B18 and the B20. There were some that were fitted with a single SU, but they're few and far between. The flange on a Stromberg and an SU is of course identical.

They were indeed used on the 140 also.

I'll have a single carb manifold somewhere. They are combined inlet and exhaust with a twin downpipe setup. The downpipe is identical to the twin SU one.

Hey, maybe look at boat engines. I have a AQ131 in an 80's Bayliner that is basically a B230 with a single downdraft carb, and a marinized alternator, starter and fuel pump, and probably a different cam.

I think you want something like an AQ100 110 or 130 boat motor for the B18/B20 layout.

    Good luck!
