940 Electrical Problem 900 1994

The a/c recently died on my 1994 940 wagon. The radio went dead too. The fuses are all OK.

My local mechanic found there was no power getting to the A/C. He figured that the A/C button on the dash was broken.

As a quick fix, he installed a jumper wire directly to the A/C unit. The A/C now works fine. The temp controls work perfectly too.

But the radio is still not getting power.

Question:

Does anyone know if the radio draws power from the same circuit as the A/C?

If so, can I use a jumper to provide power to the radio? I don't feel like tearing apart the dash, if it can be avoided.

My alternative solution might be to replace the radio with an aftermarket unit and tap directly into the fusebox. (The existing radio is the original cassette unit and the tape player is long dead.)

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Many thanks.

Fuse 14 is for the radio. Fuse 16 is for the AC. Fuses 14, 15, and 16 have common supply. It is a black wire, and connects inside the protected socket under fuse 16, on the bottom side. It comes from terminal X on the ignition switch.

Your problem is most likely the ignition switch, but could also be the connection at the underside of the fuse unit.

John-

Thanks, I will check it out.

The wierd thing is, aside from the A/C only the radio is dead. All the other accessories and instruments are working. Maybe it is two separate problems.

Your original post said the AC had been jumpered out, to run, by the mechanic. That is why the AC is working. Your problem could be in the fuse unit, too.

940 Electrical Problem 900 1994

John-

Problem solved, and it turned out to be far simpler than I thought.

The fuse unit checked OK so I pulled the radio to check the conector for power. Turned out that the connector wasn't seated properly! The radio is working now.

So it looks like the A/C failure is a separate issue related to a defect in the climate control circuit.

Thanks for your help.

See the FAQ for tips: could be a solder connection on the HVAC PC board.
