Rear hatch wire harness threading... 200

Sages:

I just had to replace one of my wagon's rear hatch hinges (don't ask). While doing so I decided to swap out the wiring harnesses for both sides, as there have been issues (no rear wiper for one). Board be praised for all the helpful tips on how to do so! Anyway, I had the hardest time feeding the wires inside the body of the gate. Rushed, I hid them behind the awful plastic cover-up on the inside of the hatch glass.

My question is, if I notch that plastic and make room for the wires (at their entry points-- there's plenty of room behind that plastic) is there any reason other than aesthetics that I'd need to run them through the body of the gate? I know this is an offense to purists, but please do weigh in.

Thanks in advance,
cg

    Hi there,

I'm no sage, and I haven't done this myself, but I would venture with confidence, the only reason not to do this is the way it looks. Few of us plan to sell our wagons, so, who cares?

Not what you asked, but I used a hunk of orange wire as a fish, to drag the harness through.

      Thanks, Art.

Yeah, I was thinking that, too. I don't plan on selling this car, and unless you know to look for it, it's not quickly obvious. I had the door propped up and had the hardest time. I'll take another look this weekend and try to fish as you illustrated. If I can't get it fairly quickly, I'm going to make those notches.

Thanks again! I just wanted to double-check it was okay, if not truly Kosher.

What I remember about fishing that cable was unpinning the connector, then noticing, I think, the connector was small enough to fit through the holes - and designed that way. It was a long time ago, but I also remember disliking the butyl rubber on a warm summer afternoon.

Can't think of a reason in the world why you shouldn't take the short cut with the wiring. Might even last longer that way.
