yazaki cluster temp gauge in red/shorts a/c out help!!!

ADMIN: PLEASE FEEL FREE TO PLACE THIS MESSAGE IN THE PROPER THREADS IF NECESSARY AS APPROPRIATE.

i have a question regarding the yazaki speedo clusters versus the vdo units.
as some of you know i am the proud owner of a 1986 740 wagon with nearly 300,000 miles and still running strong. well i went to look for a diffrent instrument cluster at the wreckers and i found a 1987 sedan that had the yazaki cluster that matched up to my wiring(3 pins on the wire below the speedo not 4 like the newer ones)
i have the vdo setup in my 740 and was told that yazaki can be used also so i figured why not. well the issue here is this:

the speedometer, rpm meter, od and fuel gauge all work fine. no issues there
the problem is that the temp gauge goes all the way to the far red and fluctuates as i start the car up. also the a/c clutch circuit gets "shorted?" out with that cluster in place. how would i fix the cluster so that it will work perfectly. i hooked up everything exactly the way its supposed to be. also there is a check or system check light in the yazaki cluster that dissappears after a few seconds.
maybee there is a diode or something on the flexboard that needs to be cut out or switched?

any help would be greatly appreciated. you dont know how much of a pain it is to get a cluster thats appropriate for my 740 ive tried many sources and cars to no avail. and finally got something i can work with. also if any other parts are needed tell me so i can pick them up on friday.

thanks,
geoff

Your 1986 749 uses a single wire temperature sender for the gauge, and the gauge is made to match. 1987 model year 740s use a two wire sender, and a gauge to match.

What is wrong with the 1986 instrument cluster?

thanks for the info. i thought that 1989 was the crossover year for the 2 wire sensor. couldve sworn a dealer said the main harness is interchangeable up untill 1988 model year being the last but maybee something got snuck in there along the way or a brainless service tech who knows lol.

well the issue with my cluster is this: i was a dumb a** i mean literally, not reading my manual clearly stating DO NOT push the trip reset button while in motion and if the gear is busted simply replace the gear. to make a long story short i busted the tach needle clear off thinking i could remove it. i interchanged the head with a 240 head and the 740 electronics but nothing works. it does work if i swap that little yellow resistor? box part with the 240 part but the speedo says 120 when im at 55 mph so it throws the whole shebang off.(od measures 100 percent though) replaced the original part on the circuit board and gave up for the time being.(mileage is currently being kept on my gps) atleast i won a 100 dollar total incompatability bet with the dealer few years back lol but regardless i need this to work. like i mentioned many sources say that the 740s can interchange yazaki and vdo clusters respectively without any mods(even the haynes says it) but i only got one cluster working and that was parted out years back:( im totally stuck here as where to go. can i mod the 240 head(240 speed sensor?) or is the flex board in need of mods on the yazaki cluster. everything works except the ac short issue and temp gauge.
oh also can i just get away with putting the yazaki head in the vdo setup? i thought i tried if memory serves me right and things are a bit diffrent.

Why don't you just get a 1985 or 1986 740 instrument cluster? Wouldn't that be easiest?

well fist off good luck finding an 85 cluster or 86. i did see only one 85 sedan but the cluster i do not think is in there anymore(if it is not crushed by now) and i think it too is a yazaki unit. a junkyard in arizona i called said that the compatability is based on weither or not on the od and trip window(on actual face) has a completely open rectangle area or if its got the lines seperating any numbers and to match accordingly but it must be vdo verses vdo. now im really confused.

Where I live, and visit self serve wrecking yards, the older 740s are plentiful. Last Sunday my son and I pulled the digital outside temperature gauge out of a 1985 NA 745. There are several of that vintage in yards in the area.

nice what area are you from? wisconsin here. i actually did locate a yard in madison who has ONE vdo cluster(from a 1986) ill call them on monday they said 45 bucks plus shipping if i dont feel like going 2 hours each way give or take. finally(whew)
i am however looking for another 1985 760 because i want the 40x2 amp they had seperate amps for front and rear and i have one but i wanna make my stereo 40x4 2 seperate amps with the m-bus y adaptor lol.
btw i did cross the volvo 1987 versus 1986 and both have single wire temp gauges up untill 1989 i had to make double sure lol. im also having volvo call sweden and theyll give me the assembly date so i can be positive on this issue i will post my results

              geoff:)

We have two 1987 740Ts in the household. Both have two wire engine temperature gauge sending units. I don't car what you found in paperwork, I know what was made and delivered.

                I'm in Vancouver, WA.
