Clunkers 700

Seems my '89 740turbo qualifies for the scrapheap. I'm not gonna do it, I tell ya! This car came into the family because I couldn't afford a new one. Even if I could afford a new one it seems wrong to send an otherwise perfectly good car to the shredder.

Turbos qualify 700

For the fun of it, I checked and an 89 740 turbo sedan qualifies but non turbos do not. The 16 valve GLEs also qualify.

According to the EPAs figures the TURBO just gets the 18 MPG combined. For the Non Turbo it just said the vehicle does not qualify.

If you were actually planning on spending the big bucks for a new car, it is a bargain for you.

I was saddened to see a 2000 S80 destroyed on YOUTUBE. Why not let me trade my 89 for it and destroy it instead?

Rant : This clunker program is a joke. Yet another misguided government handout to the wrong parties. This is similar to the bank bailout where our government rewarded/bailed out greedy & poorly run banks who screwed up the economy. Now they are rewarding greedy unfrugal folks who because of ego/status/whatever chose to drive inefficient dinosaurs. When O when is our government going to reward us frugal folx who live within our means and pay our bills and live responsibly ?? From what I understand most of the new cars that are being bought through this program are foreign brand cars(Toyota, Honda, etc.)not American brands so our economy is not being helped all so much either.

Something is awfully screwey with that list. We owned a '91 740T sedan for over 5 years and combined mileage was consistently over 25MPG. That's only about a 40% error in real mileage, and reported mileage.

Close enough for government work I guess

Good for you!

The EPA cooked the number a couple years ago, dragging down old MPG's to "match" the new standards. In reality, a 740/940 turbo isn't a "clunker".

I'd rather drive our Volvo's instead of a Civic/Focus/Corolla any day. ;)

Lets see how this program works. You get up to $4,500. For a car that loses 20-30% in 1 year and approx 40% in 3 years. Wow, what a bargain. NOT!
