mysterious to me,..... no start 200

i post this 940 question here because the board is more active and many also have this model.

first the fact: no codes thrown

daughters car 93 940 na sedan regina

2 to 3 times a week (not every time by any means) for the past month the car will upon cold startup stall after the gear shift is placed in reverse. it will without fail restart and run perfectly thereafter.

this morning the car would not start at all. there is a full tank of gas.

i........

1. determined all fuses are intact
2. the fuel pump relay is not a factor by swapping in a known good one
3. i can hear the fuel pump deliver gas to the rail
4. the fuel pressure measured normal at cranking. i swapped in a known good FPR with no effect

5. there is spark at the regina coil wire heading to the distributor
6. there is NO spark to any of the spark plugs and the plugs are wet

at this point i concluded the trouble is electric

7 i removed the cap and found it to be nasty, swapped in a new one i had with no effect. the rotor in there looked good.

8. i swapped a radio relay known good with no effect.
9. i measured the cp sensor and found it to within spec and still swapped in a known good one with no effect
10. the spark plug wires are volvo bourgicord and near new. the regina coil wire to dis is not new but looks good. i have no spare to swap.

opinions please..............what am i missing

Voltage and Ground Check 200

Below are some easy checks after you clean the ignition amplifier contacts and blue flash check the coil wire and the rest of the high voltage stuff, tonight, dark, water spray from a windex bottle.

On the coil there are two plug in connectors. Three wire plug on the top and two wire plug in the middle with the last three wire connectors unused.

In KP2, three wire connector C, at the top is a signal wire, red and white, going to the instrument cluster.
Just below is B, a black ground wire going through an eight wire connector then to ground.
Wire A, blue is a 12V un-fused, from the switch. You can check the ign switch on the hot side of fuse 12 or 13 and then check the coil connector.
Center connector, top wire B, green, is a signal wire going to the control module.
Lower is a brown ground that also goes to the control module via the same 8 wire connector.

If the Regina system has a power stage/ignition amplifier I would check that?

problem solved 200

initally i found spark coming out of the rex coil to the diz.

my daughter went back and removed the 2 bolts on the coil from its other half and cleaned up the contacts and the coil posts good and shiny. then sandpapered all the metal till shiny and wire brushed the bolts.

after putting everything back together the car now starts right up.

apparently corrosion and bad grounds on the rex coil/ignition to the frame could do this

I am far from the expert but you have spark. And it seems logical you will have adequate fuel pressure at the rail(I spose you could test at the schrader valve to make sure). So it seems you need to confirm you are getting pulses to your injectors? I would probably let her crank a little and pull a plug and see if its gas soaked. That tells you injectors are working. Check connector to CPS to make sure the female ends havent got beaten up/bent. Have you cleaned the ground connections on the wall behind the battery? I would also recommend re-reading some of Lucid's posts on the subject as he has a very methodical method of narrowing down the problem.
Good luck

You misread his post. He said he has NO spark at the plugs. He does have signal at the coil. He does have wet spark plugs.

I am not familiar with the Regina system, but a guess would be that either there is a problem in the distributor electronics preventing spark to trigger or the rotor saft is not turning (mechanical failure).

EDIT:
I just looked at the 700/900 FAQ and two things that may (again, not faimilar with the Regina system) cause a no start are bad coil (evidently this is common with this system) or a bad power stage. May give it a check.

i forgot 200

to mention i did check the timing belt and it is ok. i did NOT check to see the rotor actually turn with the cap off. but i do not see how it could not turn if the t belt is intact.

Maybe the belt is off a tooth and the timing is also off?
It's not unusual to have this happen, and on a block mounted dist, can make the spark off enough to miss the stroke and not fire at TDC causing your fouled plugs.

Put a timing light on it to make sure

Only way would be if the pin that holds the drive gear on sheared off. Highly unlikely.....BTW, I had an edit to my previous post. May want to check it.
