timing belt broke 700 1989

1989 740 8valve rex regina 230 f engine.
How do I know that camshaft is in the right position? is there anyway for the timing marks to line up&the cam to be 180degs out of phase?

The link to this image is easy to overlook in the FAQ's concerning timing belt replacement.

More experienced people than I will probably post in short order, but if this happened to me I would try this. When cylinder 1 is at TDC it is at a compression stroke. With the plugs removed, rotating the crank with a ratchet back and forth will show you very clearly if it is at the compression stroke by noisily breathing in or out. Once you know that everything is 'in phase,' getting the TB on using the reference marks should be easy.

Thanks ,Shortly after I posted this ,I found it in a 240 engine post that it will work out if the cam is spot on &the crank sprocket is inline w/the engine block mark.
I thought it was possible to be 180deg away.
Those guides for replacing a belt only mention that yr.taking off one belt&replacing it.They don't specify what to do if it breaks.

The belt breaking is no biggie, no damage done. If they havent been replace recently you really should consider replacing the V-belts(a/c,p/s and alternator) and the water pump as the belts have to come off and the water pump will be fully exposed. Also consider doing all three oil seals as it is only a little more work whilst you are in there(and they are like 3$ each). It'll take you 3 hours plus the first time. To get the crankpulley off you will either need a crank hold tool or use the "rope method". Read and re-read the FAQ's on the topic. Good luck!

Rather then crank holding tool I recommend the rope trick(see FAQ). I have used this method/trick twice now. Works great. Agree that while you have front area apart you should do belts, seals, and water pump. Your total for everything (pump, seals, belts)should be under $100 and time wise maybe adds 1/2 to 1 hour to job.
