tranny woes update 200

I needed to replace the kickdown cable on my 90 240DL.I decided to use the Bentley manual because it was handy,in the garage. My green books were in the house.I followed the instructions and then had a problem.I could not access the cable in the cam.The cam spun around and it became even harder to remove the cable.I was stuck.I checked the Volvo green books and sure enough one step in the procedure was left out. When you remove the tranny pan you will see the cable and cam.NOW PULL CABLE WITH LONG-NOSE PLIERS TO FORM A LOOP.This step very important because with the cable in a loop you can hold the cam in the right position and then wedge a screwdriver in there to hold it in place.Although the Bentley book show the same photo of a screwdriver and a cable in a loop it made no mention of that procedure. It only makes reference to the screwdriver.Nevertheless I was able to remove the cable by feeding the cable into the cam.It finally unwound enough that I could grab it with the pliers and then finish the job.It helps to have a long thin screwdriver and an index finger. You try to rotate the cam with your finger then wedge the screwdriver, then rotate the cam, then the screwdriver until you get the cam where you can hook up the new cable.PIA.
A few tips: I like to work with those blue surgical gloves to keep clean, not going to happen. Also if the glove breaks you may leave a piece in the tranny.
After you drain the tranny it pays to have a cardboard box with plastic liner to put under the tranny. The tranny will keep leaking, also if your car is on ramps you will still have fliud in the pan.If you decide to replace the filter expect more fluid to come out.Keep the box handy.
You will need a 24mm wrench to remove the filler tube and a 30mm wrench to counter hold the nut on the pan.You will be pulling the 24mm wrench down towards the ground to loosen the filler tube nut,use PB Blaster first.
It helps to have a 10mm drive handle to reinstall the pan bolts.I also use sewingthread to hold the gasket in place.Just tie it in 4 or 5 places to keep it from moving around.
when I removed the filler tube nut,the tube did not want to come out of the pan.You may need to force out. When you reinstall the pan try to screw the filler tube on a few threads then put the pan back on.I did not do this and now I have to take the pan off again.
If you like working on you car consider having the under carriage steam cleaned. It gets messy real fast.If working in your driveway or street for that matter get some large cardboard boxes to lay out under your car.Your going to get tranny fluid everywhere, even if your carefull.
This was a bit messy, somewhat agravating, and a little nerve racking.

Congratulations on accomplishing your mission! I've replaced 4 KD cables over the years, and if it's any consolation, this is one job that gets much easier with practice! In addition to its messiness and propensity to migrate, I would have to rate tranny flud as the most noxious smelling liquid in an automobile.

If you think auto trans fluid has an odor to it, wait till you do a Dana Posi rear end fluid swap that has the required friction modifier mixed in! I've done that change a few times and use an activated charcoal mask as I can't stand the smell of rotting fish in the sun!

A buddy of mine had his wife help on his drag car with a rear end fluid change, first whiff, she puked... he commented she was pregnant... sure enough two days later EPT confirmed!

Bently does it again.
See my recent thread on replacing the gaskets on an M47 transmission.

Thanks for the great post! I agree with you, that tranny fluid somehow migrates better than just about any other fluid found in a car. Thanks for all of the tips, and maybe that Bentley update will make it into the modified tome that Art is working on.
