How to tell the difference between a CAM and ZF power steering rack 200 1986

I'm considering purchasing a rebuilt power steering rack on Ebay for my 1986 240 sedan with an automatic transmission. The description states differentiate whether you have a CAM or ZF rack. I asked the seller to how to tell the difference and no response. Can anyone out there please provide some guidance on this? That is how to tell the difference between a CAM or ZF power steering rack for a 1986 240 with an automatic transmission.

Here is the link to the rack:

I'd be rather skeptical of that one...

the boots look to be CAM, but... there's clearly the ZF on the housing... something don't seem right with that one..

I would not by a rebuilt rack on eBay, simply because you don't know what you're getting (that one is too cheap to have been rebuilt by mother Volvo herself). Plus there's always a chance you may need to take the rebuilder up on their warranty. I got a bum rebuilt rack last summer.

Anyhoo... you can tell the difference between a CAM and ZF from the boots on the tie rod. The ZF rack has a big fat donut on the tie rod, and the end of the boot is wide to fit around it, whereas the CAM rack tie rod lacks this, and the dust boot clamps directly around the shaft of the tie rod. Hope that makes sense. :-)

    Hi Brian,

I don't know why it would make any difference to the seller or buyer what type you are replacing, if the seller includes all the hardware, but the classic identification is at the small end of the rack's tie rod boot. The boot that necks down to the 10mm tie rod is for a CAM rack, and the boot that has an inch-and-a-half rubber grommet at the end is for ZF. Or look at the nameplate under the muck.
