Being new to the Volvo world, I didn't realize what I was doing today when I spent over an hour in the auto parts store parking lot trying to figure out why my passenger side rear fog light wouldn't work.

I think the car should have Two or none, the one Fog that they implemented in, what, 91 was silly. my '89 has two.


Pins 1 or 2 on the Passenger side will feed the Foglight socket. If you look at the drivers side, The white wire for the Fogs are on 7 or 8. Those two pins are tied together at the Circuit board. Tap off the Drivers side whit e wire if there is not a wire going to the passenger side then a quick solder to the Circuit board and you are good. These lights do not pass through the Bulb Failure Sensor so there is no worry there.

You Volvo guys (ladies) are probably pretty conservative about using the rear fog light, and this is a valuable safety feature. But I often see nitwits in Mercedes or recent XC-90 -type SUVs with the rear fog light glowing brilliantly on completely clear nights. Two options:
1. They have no idea that the thing is on and don't know why an indicator is on on their dashboard.
2. They think they are making their car more safe by blinding people behind them.

I don't know about Mercedes, but fog lights on all recent Volvos must be activated each time the car starts--the "on" state doesn't persist across startups. So yes, they're doing it intentionally...

I like the high-dollar, luxury SUVs that drive with front foglights on at all times. It's nice to drive down I-95 at night with an SUV shining 6 headlights right through your back window. Of course, this makes it safer...for them. Who gives a damn if I die because I'm blind? The important part is that they can see a tiny bit better.

I'm planning to fight BACK at these elevated Santa Fe Engine lights in my rear view mirrior (I will say it eliminates the need for a roof lamp to find things in the floor board) but anyway I have a few projector beams style fog lights and I intend to use one (or two) on the rear crossbar of my bike rack to shine back at them! LOL - I already have micro lights on the front bar in addition to fogs under the bumper so I have 180 degrees of view at night.

Don't worry about it. I bet a lot of people don't know that. It's a pretty stupid "foglight."

I did the same. But I gave up. What's the punch line?

Driver side only.

The wire is there for it no place to hook it up to the assy. If you have to purchase a replacement the aftermarket ones have the connections for the light and you will have both.

Well I was seriously baffled by it because there was a bulb, bulb socket, and a printed circuit there. Why go through all the trouble of having that if it doesn't work. Why not just leave it a blank section on the circuit board? My guess is to have it a spare? Still doesn't explain the printed circuit though.

Probably to accommodate the right hand drive countries, where the right side light would probably be enabled instead of the left. I don't know this to be a fact, but I don't know why the left hand lamp would be enabled in a right hand drive country, since it would defeat the purpose.

Right hand drive markets. It's cheaper to have it all printed and ready to go then just not hook it up to whatever side is the outside of the road.

Yup, reportedly the functioning rear fog light is on the driver's side. Switched for left/right hand drive cars.

My '89 has rear fogs on both sides, as did my '86. Somewhere along the line they went to single-side only to avoid the confusion of drivers thinking they were brake lights.

I think in Europe those rear fogs are pretty common so they get recognized when seen. Here, they seem to generate confusion almost no matter what the circumstances.

I do use the dual rear fogs on the '89 for foggy/rainy conditions. I also use them for drivers following too close behind me. Sometimes they get the idea and back off. If not, I give them a good dose of the REAL brake lights, that usually fixes it.
