97 V90 compressor - Seltec, Sanden, Seiko?

I have a bad clutch on my V90's compressor. The air blows cold for ~20-30 mins then blows not cold air. I shut it off for about 5-10 mins and then it will work again for 20 mins (ad nauseum). Since the car has 148k miles, it's probably time just to replace the entire unit, but the dealer wants $390 for OEM (I assume Seiko), Voluparts wants $385 for a new Seltec, and NostalgicAirParts says they can get a rebuilt Sanden (w/ a 1 yr warranty!) for $250. So, is there really any difference in brands here??? Thanks!

Given that it is cutting out for 5-10 minutes, I'm thinking that the system is going over pressure (over temp) and there's a problem not related to the compressor or compressor clutch.

You need to find out if the compressor is energized during this phase. I'm thinking the answer is that it's not energized. A high temperature condition could be from a number of causes, but I'd do the easy stuff first: Make sure the A/C is engaging the engine fan, and make sure that the condenser fins are absolutely clear of debris. However, if all of these things have been done, something else is going on.

The symptoms you describe do not necessarily mean bad clutch or compressor, in fact that is not likely. How was it determined that the compressor or clutch is bad? When a clutch fails it usually does not work at all due to an open coil or mechanical breakage. It typically does not go intermittent as you describe. I think more diagnostic observation may is needed. When the cooling stops you should determine if the clutch is disengaged or not, simply pull over and have a look. If the clutch is still turning then it could be icing up of the evaporator or other causes. Has the low side pressure been checked? If the clutch is disengaged it may mean the compressor overtemp sensor has kicked out (i have had this happen on my 97 V90). In any event do not change the clutch without a positive diagnosis.

      Hi David,
The clutch is disengaging because it is overheating. I had taken to other mechanics and they tried to fix it by replacing the low pressure switch and rerouting the drain tubes (thinking it was icing up) and that solved nothing. Then they tried to say I need a whole new automatic climate control unit (not!) So I took it to someone that came highly recommended and trusted and he says the problem is with the clutch overheating and subsequently disengaging. Turning the AC off for 5-10 mins apparently gives it enough time to cool back down... Can I, in this situation, still just replace the overtemp sensor as you suggested? I would think that sensor would be there to protect the clutch from burning out? Thanks bunch!
