Tail light wiring and brightness. 200 1990

A few months ago the rear lights on driver's side stopped working so I soldered the wires onto the light holding fixtures with no particular problems. Then I noticed the running light on the passenger's side stopped working. I could not figure it out so I just ran a wire from the newly fixed DS light to the nonworking PS light. It worked OK, except that the PS light is BRIGHTER than the DS and it burns out faster than the dimmer one.
A friend recommended that I check the grounds for the lights, which I did with no results. The PS light remains brighter, and presumably will burn out faster.
Anyone know a fix for this weirdness?
Thanks.

You didn't accidently solder the running light wire to the Brake filiment, did you?

    Hi there,

You may have to take a few steps in reverse to check your previous fixes.

Then I noticed the running light on the passenger's side stopped working.

There should be two running lights on each side, as I understand the '90 sedan. The inner ones are 5W (5 watt) single filament lamps, and the outer ones are the 5W portion of the dual filament lamp, shared with the 21W brake lights. If you have a wagon, all you have are the two-button lamps.

Doesn't that orange light on the dash drive you nuts, or have you found some black tape for it? I've had to solder wires around circuits interrupted by melted plastic on even newly replaced OE sedan tail light assemblies. Grrrr.

There's no approach better than the one Will suggested - use a meter to find out where the electricity is going. If you find the voltages fairly equal, consider the 21W brake light portion of the bulb might be getting lit instead.

With the bulbs in and lit up, check the voltage on each socket. You should have an equal, 11 - 13V on each bulb. If the dim one is noticably less there is a resistance or ground issue.

    Regards,
