transmission growl? 200 1983

Hi all,

I've come across a very nice 70k-mile 1983 242 automatic (with overdrive button). Drives very nice but when braking or coasting to a stop in Drive (did not try it in neutral, alas) there's a pronounced growl from the transmission area that becomes audible around 15mph and slows / fades as you stop moving. Happens every stop, cold to warm. I've read about high-frequency noise from a driveshaft carrier bearing audible at highway speeds but this car's noise is only audible going slowly. Ideas? Run away?

Long-time car collector but first Volvo interest - thanks very much for your help!

Regards,
Jeff

Gratuitous bump... Anyone? Pleeeez? Don't want to see this one get away but the price is high if it'll need a transmission in short order. At least I can negotiate from a better-informed position.

    Thanks very much,
    Jeff

      Hi Jeff,

If you're a do-it-yourselfer, a 242 with a nice body makes even a tranny problem trivial to the Volvo crowd. Worth saving. If not the driveshaft support bearing, it might be the noise produced by a worn bushing where the shaft exits the transmission. It is a common trouble and fairly easy backyard repair. There's another thread going on that right now: Transmission Output shaft bushing pictorial (Art?) Instructions?

That trouble can be felt by reaching under the car and wiggling it at the flange.

What you need to look for is rust. Rust growls much louder in a 242.

The growl can happen from the bearing at any speed. Usually after getting wet and cold. I thought my transmission was going due to the growl before I found the brickboard. A mechanic agreed with me and i spent money I should't have on a transmission swap. Even then if you find a transmission for say $100 it was only like $400 to put it in. But this guy was kind of a cheap compare to the $600 my regular mechanic said he'd do it for.

Who knows take it to a car wash and spray some water under there and see if it gets worse. Or peel back the rubber donut and spray some liquid grease in it to stop it. Mine would come and go depending on the weather.

Ditto above. Spray PB blaster everywhere you can reach and expect to find the issue, which may not be a problem.

Thanks very kindly, folks. Gratified to hear it may not be a huge deal. The car is extremely un-rusty and the engine is very clean inside so it may make a decent case for itself, growl notwithstanding. No AC is odd, but not a deal-breaker.

While I'm imposing, I see that a dealer-looking sticker underhood tells of a timing belt change in 1995 at 65000 miles. Current mileage is 72K. Safe to assume the belt should be changed again asap?

Also, it's rich at hot idle and no one would be surprised to find it needs an O2 sensor (thing looks original...). There's a slight flat spot just off idle; otherwise starting and running seem great. Is it reasonable to think it does NOT need an ECU, which I've heard can be spendy on these cars?

          Thanks again,
          Jeff
