Balance shaft belt redundant? 900 1991

Hi,

I read that for a B234 engine, the balance shaft belt is not critical, and can be removed with no ill effects, other than maybe some vibration at high rpm, is that true?
Anyone who has removed the balance shaft belt some time ago and their brick is still running fine after thousands of miles?
I'm thinking of doing the same, your feedback is much appreciated.

ok, background. porsche designed that motor setup. the 944s have used balance shafts since 84? volvo asked them to design the 16v. my ONLY experience with no belt on the balance shaft is a porsche shop across the street in the late 90's that removed that belt to loose weight-yes, they said that, and to gain horsepower. because the crank has to work that much harder to run 2 belts instead of just 1. around town instead of the track, i can't say. i WILL say that leaving that belt off removes the possibilty of it breaking and getting tangled in the cam belt, screwing that up, and bending valves. VERY exspensive. just my 2 cents, good luck, chuck.

(actually I thought it was Mitsubishi who came up with the balance shafts, Porsche used them on their 968 cars.)
Probably OK to remove, mine broke once and the vibration was definately noticable.
But I think that engine is so great because of those balance shafts that I would always keep it on.

1-mits came up with balance shafts, you're right. there's a harmonic that occurs at 2.3 liters that no one seems to have a cure for. that's why the mits 2.6 has balance shafts. they dribbled down to the 1.4s, 1.6s, etc.

2-volvo asked porsche for help AFTER THE 944 came out in 84. the 968 is the later 944. the early volvo 16vs-81 and up, only race, not for street, i've got part numbers-did not do well. the blocks cracked, hence the balance shafts.

3-you really should have posted on the 1st post, not mine. been more effective.
