AW70 slipping 200

Hello fellow brickboarders my 91 245 w/ 178K is having some transmission issues. The car usually shifts fine, but sometimes when applying light throttle in 4th gear the transmission slips out of gear then back to 4th. The fluid is not burnt, the kickdown cable is properly adjusted and it shifts fine through all the other gears. I just wanna know if I should be looking for a new tranny?

AW70 slipping 200

In short, I'd say yes. The overdrive clutches are the daintiest and easiest/most prone to failure. If you do replace it, I'd recommend looking for an AW71 from a turbo 700-900 series. Much stronger transmission, but there are some minor mods that must be done for it to work in a 240, linkages and such. Well worth the effort 'tho...the AW71 in my 84 760 GLE Tic has taken a LOT of abuse (18 p.s.i.) and performs flawlessly while the AW70 I pulled from my 90 740 to install the V8 was already "hinky" at 125k. Most people will tell you the AW70 isn't worth rebuilding; the AW71, on the other hand, has aftermarket clutch packs that make it worth the rebuild. Check turbobricks.com for more info on swapping from AW70 to AW71 in a 240.
