Odometer compatability (86 to 89) 200 1989

My car has a failed odometer. I assume its just the gear and already ordered a new one, but if this doesn't fix it, I'm wondering which other odometers are compatible.

My car is an 89 auto sedan. I have access to an 86 manual wagon. Can I swap the entire gauge cluster or just the odometer from this car into my 89? And if I can't, what should I look for? To be honest, I don't care if its accurate, just that it rolls miles to pass inspection.

    In the UK there is sometimes another surprising incompatibility. The sensor version on the axle crown wheel housing has to match the speedo head, or else it doesn't register at all.

    There are more differences between the various years of electronic clusters than are initially visible. The speed difference between the 10042 and 9800 speedo heads is minimal. I think it works out to about 1.3 mph at 60--somebody out there remember the math for final drive ratio? As Paul mentioned, it has to do with the larger tires Volvo originally spec'd for the wagons for load handling. IMHO, the tire stores stopped stocking the oddball sized tire when the general quality and load recommendations increased with technology and the 185-70-14 tires could hold as much as the taller, older size wagon tires. I think the wagons took 175-R14 from the factory. A good swap is, I think, 195-75-14. Your tire store has software these days to convert the size.
    As to interchange on the cluster, all of the clusters from 86 through 91 will work and give you basic functions in all of those years. That is, speedometer, clock or tach, fuel and temp gauges and odometers will work. The warning light positions on the left half of the cluster change considerably. Starting in '88 there is a service reminder light on the far left and a reset lever in the rear. For 89 Volvo added halogen illumination lamps for the cluster. 89 is the first year for LH 2.4 with the check engine light also. In 90 the service reminder reset has a remote button on the front, lower right corner so you don't have to reach in back of the dash to reset the light. 90 is also the first year for SRS (airbag) so there is a light for that. 92 on is a completely different cluster. If you have cruise control, you should know that you must use a cluster from a car that uses the same cruise system as yours if you want that to work. An 86 cluster will read fine in an 89, but you will not get the cruise to work.       David--Thanks for all the info! I'm so used to the 89+ models, that I forgot/didn't know about some of the little differences from the earlier models. I didn't realize the service light was knew in 88. I've never really liked mine--it seems to come on at such random intervals, so I tend to just rest and ignore it. No cruise control in any of the cars, so that simplifies things.
      I just got the odometer gear in the mail, so I'm going to try to get that in soon, and hope that fixes it.

        Happy to help. I have the service light working in my 91, but I also ignore it. I found it will light at anywhere from 2400 to 3800 miles!

    The wagon speedo is not the same as the one on a sedan. The wagon has larger tires (unless you let Discount Tire tell you what size goes on your car) and the circuit board is slightly different. With that said it will fit and work in a 89 model, just not accurately.

    I had fixed my odometer a couple of years ago and was about to finally go back to the right tire size from TireRack Tuesday night (see the part about Discount Tire). I was going to have an accurate speedo finally. Filling up on Monday night the mileage read 159 miles and it took 10 gallons to fill up. I was about to post a email asking for help with a sudden MPG drop. You guessed it's broke again and you would be right. This time it is not the gear, put one of those BB recommended ones in. May be an old chunk of the old gear stuck someplace, but bet you it is not the replacement.

    Next sunny day in the 70's (supposed to be that way this Saturday) time to pull the dang cluster one more time.

      I thought the tire difference would throw it off a bit, but it's good to know that it will at least work if I have to go that route. This is a car I actually just sold to a friend, so I'm not looking to really put much money into it. Just need it to pass inspection for him...

      Good luck with your repairs. Oh, and weather in the 70s? Wow, I was just happy it was above freezing today...

        You have to have a working OD to pass inspection?

        Glad I do not have to pass one in your state. Emissions are bad enough.

          PA inspection 200 1989

          Paul, the odometer has to work to keep track of mileage for vehicle sales (and for emission inspection in the areas that have it [exempt from emission test if under 5k miles in the 1 year inspection period]). Our PA titles have to list the mileage when sold with these codes: 0=actual mileage. 1=mileage exceeds the mechanical limits. 2=not the actual mileage. 3=not the actual mileage-odometer tampering verified. 4=exempt from odometer disclosure.           Yup, according to mechanic boyfriend (though he passed it anyway). Apparently PA has the one of the strictest inspections of any state. Luckily our emissions is just a "visual inspection" and a gas cap test. They talk about doing stiff tests, but so far so good--I really don't want to deal with that.

            Laine, we used to have twice-a-year safety-inspection in PA when I started driving in 1968! As a motorcycle driver (hopefully soon to be again when we get a state wide cell phone use law) I'm glad we have the safety-inspection. Mike.

              I definitely agree with the basics of a safety inspection--its caught things that I had noticed, and I stay on top of my car maintenance--I know others don't, so I'm glad they're forced to at least once a year. Some of the more nit-picky details are a little irritating though--seems like it should be my concern if my odometer doesn't work, not the state's.

              But twice a year? Really? That would seriously be a pain!
