best inner panel tailgate fix? 700 1991

I did buy the repair kit but looking at it, it appears that a PO of my brick tried the same thing. Tailgate still clunks. Is there any "real" fix to this other than this kit? It's bad on my 745 and terrible on my 965. Thanks.

best inner panel tailgate fix? 700 1991

Welcome to the party!

I found that our 740 already had the repair kit installed when I went to install the one that I bought. There's really no simple fix that I know of.

I wonder if screws and layer of carpet in between the panel and tailgate would quiet things down a bit?

I used the IPD kit, and it took considerable fiddling to get it to hold the panel solidly so that it didn't rattle, and the third brake light was tight against the back window (to prevent annoying red glow in the mirror when braking at night) and then the gap between the top edge of the panel and the glass was larger than I would have liked. (but at least it was finally quiet...)

On another car I dismantled, I found a kit had already been installed, but the plastic clips had actually torn through the thin sheet metal of the repair pieces. The whole thing is just a bad design, and unfortunately, it carried over pretty much unchanged onto the 850 wagon.
