in-tank pump removal 200 1986

Everything I've read so far says that to remove the in-tank pump assembly (from a sedan) you wiggle and angle it out of the tank hole. I spent awhile trying this and counldn't find a way without dropping the float in the tank - does anyone have any special tricks/tips?
