Adding 3rd brakelight to an 85 model wagon. 200 1985

I have a pristine 3rd brake light from a 1987 245, complete with the metal glue on mounting feet, and the complete pigtail. Has anyone added this to an older 245 that did not come with one? Any ideas on the wiring hookup so as not to turn on the lamp failure light? Or would I be better off to pass it along to someone who really needs it for their 86 and newer wagon?

Bill

Adding 3rd brakelight to an 85 model wagon. 200 1985

    Bill:

I back in the late '80s I a 3rd rear brake lignt to an '85 245 M46 which came as a kit from Volvo. As I recall the power connection was a line that ran from the + feed at the 3rd light to a 2 pole male spade connector at the brake light switch at the brake pedal. The gound went to a screw under the rear hatch cover. By feeding the power from the 2 pole spade brake light switch there is not out of balance draw from left or right to cause the light failure light to come on.

Of course you have to bring the line through the tailgate hinge down the right rear pillar and under the floor up to the brake pedal. NAPA sells the single to dual pole bronze connector adaptor that you need to do this.

    Hope this helps

    Al

I have an 84 DL wagon that the PO installed a 3rd brake light on. It is an LED strip glued onto the bottom of the window(Valens EX-288KA). The installer drilled a small hole for the wires in the upper right corner just forward of the rubber seal and ran the wires down and tied them into the brake light wires. It looks good and does not cause the bulb failure light to come on.
