comments on the 240? 200

The 240 is probably one of the most perfectly designed cars...ever. Close to being the 1970's version of the Model T. They are based on a design and engineering philosophy that will never be repeated in the automotive industry again. Concerns over gas mileage and other environmental impacts are now causing manufacturers to make cars that are lighter, with more complex engine management systems. Because the 240 was designed in an earlier time, it is fairly large, heavy and in the electronics department, primitive by today's standards. This translates directly into comfort, utility, durability and simplicty of repair and maintenance.

The 240 is strong, reliable, repair access is fantastic, maintenance is very straightforward. The interior comfort and visibility are wonderful, and not approached by anything on the market today. On a weekend I can put half a lumber yard in my 1980 242, or haul enough stuff to supply a small country. With a few fairly simple bolt-on modifications to the suspension, you have a car that handles as well as most sports cars of today. And, it was designed to be comfortable for people in the 6-foot range -- not some theoretical "average" person. The nicest attribute of the 240 is the very small turning radius making ay sort of maneuvering in tight spaces, parking, etc. a real dream. And check out the greenhouse-like visibility of a 240 !

Curiously, I have received newer model Volvos as rental cars, and while obviously well made, and technologically advanced, they are not a substitute for my 28-year old 240. The plethora of airbags in the newer cars contribute to safety, but at a cost of reduced visibility and interior space. Horsepower and "performance" are better in the newer cars, but gas mileage is not appreciably better --certainly not what could be expected in nearly 30 years of engine and transmission development -- than in my 1980. And the newer cars have a more detached feel when driving.

Of course, our beloved 240's are still being used as daily drivers, and give the impression of immortality. But, they are old, discontinued cars, and some parts are now getting harder to find or have been discontinued. Also, sometimes finding someone to work on an older -- or "classic" -- car is getting more difficult. Some, nay a lot, of the techs working at my local dealer and independent shops weren't even born when my car was made, and find it odd that it does not have an OBD-II port.

The 240's are great cars, but like any treasured artifact from a bygone day, they can be used, but also must be understood and accommodated.
