IPD Sway Alignment 120-130

Last night I was putting the front suspension back together and found that my new IPD sway bar is coming very close to the cross member side. I added a captured nut (I've got a '66) and located it with the new bracket as per IPD's instructions. It looks like my sway is located too far back. This may change as I get the other side bolted up, but I was wondering if anyone else has had this problem? I have a little adjustment forward, but it doesn't look like enough. Has anyone had trouble with the sway hitting the cross member?

Craig

    Fixed. 120-130

I've still got no idea why the bar is not the right size...had several measurements and all appear to be the same. No reason why this won't work on my car. It appears to be a 122 bar, but may be for the 1800. IPD are relatively useless with e-mail requests and I didn't have time to call. They probably don't care as the bar was used.

    Here's my solution.

    ]

The adapter is made out of 3/8" plate and is plenty strong.

Here we are with the bar in.

It's closer than it looks, The washer on the endlink comes very close to hitting the cross member but just misses. That should do the trick.

Have you had the chance to see where the bar lands once the suspension is loaded? This'll make more of a difference than unloaded...

Also - from these and the prior pics, it's clear that the endlink bushings aren't centered. They appear to be favoring the aft end of the moment arms.

Either way, it looks like you have a workable solution.

For what it's worth - the 122 and 1800 models use the same front swaybar. There really shouldn't be any compatibility issues.

      Car looks very nice!

I had noticed the endlink problem. I've tried to get them centered, but they slip off the center position. When I've got the brakes, wheels and engine back in place I'll loosen the endlinks off and retighten them when loaded.

      Very Nice! 120-130

That is a gorgeous suspension. Is that POR or just regular paint?

I do not think there are any differences between the 1800 and 120 suspension aside from how they attach on the back. The parts are interchangable.

Maybe that bar was just a factory second or something. That's a nice looking solution you worked out there!

Thanks RJ, The arms are POR-15'ed the rest is automotive urethane (it's a Ford wheel paint colour and is sort of semi-gloss). There are lots of custom parts to come on this car. Just picked up the chrome bits from the chrome platers today. Cost a bundle, but nice.

    IPD Sway Alignment 120-130

I think my sway could be for a 140 instead of a 122...anyone have the dimensions?

      IPD Sway Alignment 120-130

sorry can't get to the IPD bar on the front of my wagon right now for measurements, but I can say (having swapped two complete front suspension units recently) that the anti-sway bar does not normally hit the crossmember.

I'm not even sure how you mean it is hitting. It is much wider that the crossmember and the legs are too short to touch under normal circumstances... You mean the endlink-end is hitting the upper part of the crossmember?

Do you have the stock swaybar laying about to check?

        Hi RJ,

Pictures are always better...have a look at these.

Here's the bar fitted, with the brackets all the way forward so I have as much clearance as possible.

I've tested it against my original bar and the ends are longer.

          IPD Sway Alignment 120-130

I went out to the garage and snapped a pic of my 122 front IPD bar and a stock 140 front bar. As you will see theres a big dif between the two, the 140 bar is 36" 1/4 wide wide from the outside of the endlinks left to right. It's 9" from endlink to the top of the center bar on the outside edge (measuring from the floor up to the center bar, endlinks pointing down on the ground). The 122 bar is 34" 5/8 wide and 12" 3/4 from endlinks to top of bar. So the 140 bar is wider and shorter than the 122 bar, so if you had a 140 it should be even further away from the crossmember.

Looking at the bar you have, it looks different than the 122 IPD bar I have. Hope this helps.

          Chris.

            Measurement Checked 120-130

Our bars are the same width and have the same length arms. This is a bit of a problem, I was hoping they were different (aside from the hump in the middle that yours has). I've built my adapter brackets and will put them on and see what the difference is then. When the suspension is at ride height, the bar would pull away from the arms as it rotates around a point and describes an arc. I've seen photo's of other people's bars at full suspension drop and the endlink is still a comfortable distance away from the crossmember - maybe the early cars with the single bolt mounts in a slightly different place?

            Weird.

              Measurement Checked 120-130

Interesting, I picked up a set awhile back with the intentions of putting them on the 66 I'm building and never got around to installing them. Maybe I'll have to put the set on the 67 I drive daily, Did you lower the front end alot with all the work you've been doing to your Canadian? I never did compare it to the extra stock sway I cut and doubled up on my 67.

                Measurement Checked 120-130

Yes, the Canuck is about 2" lower than stock (or at least that's what I'm shooting for - hard to tell until the engine goes back in). I'm going to test fit the brackets, but compare my suspension at not quite full drop to this IPD bar at full drop.
