Oops...busted valve cover bolt 200

While trying to torque my valve-cover bolts to the Bentley-recommended 12.5 lb.-ft, I busted the bolt on the front corner (right front as you're looking at engine). Ran the engine hard, and there appears to be oil seeping into gasket at right front corner. How hard is it to replace this bolt in valve-head? Major screw up on my part...live and learn.

When you are ready to torque down the nuts on the valve cover again, I think the correct torque is 9 ft-lbs -- which is (in metric) 12.5 Nm.

At least, that is the figure that a search of the Brickboard archive reveals.

I'll be. My high school physics professor always reminded us that units are the most important! Well, I learned my lesson. I did manage to fix it, though.

How'd you fix it? 200

I was able to back the broken stud out using vice-grips. Used a hex-bolt with same thread dimensions as replacement...Jay (I think that's his name) at Yankee Trader ( a Volvo fanatic's mechanic) on the Delaware River south of Easton, PA came through in finding the bolt. If you're near southeastern PA and need a Volvo specialist, this is where you go!

Thanks.

If there is just a little bit sticking out (not enough to grab with vice grips), you can take a Dremel tool with a cut-off wheel, and carefully slice a slot across the middle of the stud, and then using a screwdriver, back the stud out.

Remove the valve cover and see if any of the stud is left sticking out, if just a little, use the cut-off wheel on a Dremel approach. If it is snapped off flush, drilling is your only option followed by an easy-out or drill-out and heli-coil. In any case, before you drill cut or grind, FILL the exposed upper galley of the cylinder head with oil soaked rags. The rags will "catch" and hold onto the resulting shavings so that when you remove them, none of the shavings will fall into the engine.

If the oil soaked rags don't sound like an "attractive option, degrease the lip of the head and tape plastic to completely cover the upper head galley.

thanks for the good advice.

Other than a junkyard, anyone know a place to get a new stud (assuming I can get the old one out?) There aren't many good junkyards around southeastern PA. The one I know that has a few old 240's is less than helpful. They only pay attention to customers when they're buying a high priced item.

Thanks.

Get one from the dealer, it should be well under five bucks. If that doesn't "float" your boat, just find a bolt with the right thread from you local AutoZone, Advance, or rob your behind blind local autoparts store.

I can't recall for certain, but I believe the thread is 6mm x 1.25 pitch... note, I could be wrong on this! If I am wrong, hopefully, others will pipe up!

If you are lucky there might be enough bolt sticking up above the head to grab with some vise-grip pliers. Otherwise you will need to drill a hole in the bolt and use an easy-out. At least it is out in the open.
