repost - broken headlight adjustment gears 700

Does anyone else have broken headlight adjustment gears? It seems like a design flaw and my headlights are stuck too far down on both sides... with broken gears it's a huge pain to try to adjust them.
Is this endemic or could I PnP some new brackets?

BTW, try hosing out your headlights (yeah, garden hose) through the headlight socket and it will make a HUGE difference if you have any dust inside them.

Happy bricking,
Will

PS I posted this in the RWD forum and I'm moving it to the 700. sorry.

repost - broken headlight adjustment gears 700

Hi, yes you can find them at PnP's, lately there's more than there used to be. The gears can be restored if they're frozen, I've done that to several over the years, lube with something penetrating and they all have loosened up. Also you can buy the little retainers that the ball end of the plastic adjusting bolt sits in. They don't seem to seize there but they can get broken.

Cleaning, yeah, it's a good idea, the best I heard which I think is in the FAQ was to take 'em out, fill with half water, half alcohol, and a single drop of dish detergent; no more, no kidding; seriously suds up. Let it soak, then rinse.
If the lens is off, because sometimes the adhesive loosens up from weather, Do Not touch or wipe the silver reflector, the silver will come off.
Mine are pretty much like new, esp after going over the lens with Tap Plastics scratch remover. There's different grades, the fine is the best choice, the coarser ones are too much. That's probably the best thing I did to mine, it's amazing.

      Thanks 700

      Hey Jerry,

Thanks for the tips. I will get some of that Tapp Plastics polish. I have a couple of 740's that need the headlamp lenses polished. I just looked it up on their site. Priced quite reasonably.

repost - broken headlight adjustment gears 700

    Hey Will,

I just replaced one of those on my '92 740. Mine was damaged from a minor hit to the lamp. It broke the bracket into 3 pieces and all of the headlamp locating ends were broken off. Those were still in the lamp, but just the ball section. I bit the bullet and got a new one from Tasca Volvo. The assembly was $52.50. The lamp was surprisingly undamaged. I suppose the plastic gears are a weakness, but metal would rust solid and be just as hard to fix. I'm sure they used plastic to save weight as well. I think the shafts get dirty and bind, which causes the plastic gears to strip. If you know a yard that has these cars, I'm sure finding one is possible. I just wanted to share my experience, and let you know that new ones are available. While not cheap, they aren't horribly expensive.

    Regards, Jon

Wow, that's a much better price than I was seeing. I was looking for the whole assembly though because both sides of the gears were toast - the part you can turn, and the gears on the screws.
I was seeing prices around like... 250 dollars or something.
Can you post info for Tasca Volvo?

Thanks a bunch everyone who replied. moving the thread really really helped :)

        Hey Will,

You can purchase the bracket that holds the lamp and signal lamp without the lamp. It has the shafts, gears and ball ends that snap into the headlamp. It is the 'whole assembly', and has all the adjustment parts with the bracket. This is the piece I needed, as my lamp was fine. It is also available with the lamp, and that costs about 141.00. I needed the left side, its part no. is 3534199. The list was 73.81 and I paid 52.20. The other side is the same amount. Tasca Volvo is in Seekonk, MA and their URL is www.tascavolvoparts.com. You can order online on the site and they can be called at 800-784-5149. Online, they have two catalogs, mechanical and collision. You need collision. Its in the 'front lamps' section, I think they call it a 'mount panel'. I hope this is what you are looking for.
