very stubborn ABS speed sensor 200 1991

I have to remove my strut and can't seem to get the ABS speed sensor to budge. Any suggestions? or precautions for that mater.

TIA,
BB

I did remove the strut along with the harness. If I am able to have the broken bolts removed from my strut tube, I will test as mentioned. If either is no I will have to source a tube and sensor as well as the disassembly of the whole strut assembly....good times.

On the bright side, just bought a low mileage 03 V70 and have a good running 89 240 DL. So I don't have to rush.

But yes this is a pain in the ol' booty

i had the great misfortune of having to remove a right front one from my daughters 93 940 recently. i imagine but can't say for certain the setup is nearly the same.
this sensor fit into a cylindrical slot in the wheel hub emerging to nearly touch a tone ring that spins on the hub. there is a magnetic pickup probe coming out of the sensor at a fixed tiny distance from the spinning ring.

anyway hers was like yours immovable. what i had to do and i am not saying you will but it might resort to this if it get real nasty. whatever you do do not damage in any way the fragile tone ring or your troubles just got lot bigger.

what i found and i suspect you will as well is the metal skin of the sensor has essentially welded itself to the slot. the fit is snug when new and their is green rubber oring at the back of the sensor which seal it in the slot. i also found on the 940 and you may as well that the cylindrical slot has formed ridge midway which encircling the slot which at that point make the slot dia slightly smaller.

i had to dremel off the magnetic end of the sensor carefully so i had some meat on the sensor with which to pound using 3 pound sledge and piece of hardened steel rod smaller in dia than the sensor. all this accomplished was to drive the internal windings thru the rear end of the metal sheath leaving the metal skin still welded to the hub slot. this required very careful chiseling to push enough meat out the back end to use pliers to extract the rest of the metal sheath without damaging the slot or the ridge in the slot.

whatever you do do NOT drive the sensor forward towards the tone ring.

it was a nightmare and took 2 hours.

you might try judicious use of heat at the slot to loosen things up. i found all the use ointments to break up rust and corrosion etc useless.

when you finally get the bugger out apply oil or vaseline to the body (NOT the magnetic tip) of the sensor before sliding it in. this will make life much easier should this ever go bad.

without doubt this was among the most unpleasant jobs i have done on a volvo.

You might want to unplug it from the harness at the corner of the firewall and just pull the whole wheel sensor and cable out with the strut. This is the safest way without risking damage to the sensor. The connectors are orange in color.

I've kinda already damaged it (cracked the area above the allen screw hole), Not sure I killed it though. I think I will take your advise though.

      Any other suggestions welcome also

        testing your sensor 200 1991

        disconnect the neg bat cable
unplug the sensor harness at the firewall and using a multimeter set for lowest ohms ...the one that sounds a tone ....probe the 2 sensor contacts. you should get a small ohm reading of something like .2 or some such small number.

if you have no ohm reading then very likely the 2 contacts affixed to the sensor windings are damaged and you will need to replace it.

the sensor is incredibly simple in construction with no moving parts.
