Tourist and diplomat sales decal 200

I have a 244 and 245 that have this decal on the back window. The Wagon came with a pile of paperwork in Swedish with the car that had the owners name on it.I guy told me,(not the orginal owner) that you could go to Sweden and drive a Volvo then ship it back to USA.Whats the deal? do you aviod tax because it is a Used vehicle rather than a new one? The other one,A 89 240 Sedan had Glass front light assy's instead of the plastic ones. Are the glass headlights only used in Europe? The Side marker light assys will only fit with the Glass headlights-I had tried to put them on a 240 I had with the plastic lenses and they are different on how they mount together.

Hey!thanks for all replys.I bought the car just for the headlamps and the M-47 Transmission. The interior is trashed-it has 740 seats in it.The engine ran well but the clutch is just about shot.I may pull the engine, trans and lens assys in the front. The Fenders are ok on the front and it has 3 good doors but It may end up at the crushers.I guy in the bad part of town had it,He has a wrecker service and had been driving it.Couldnt find the title.Sad thing was he did have a 145 wagon with no rust that he got out of a abandonded Garage. It had 4 speed manual trans with a B-18?? the engine looked like a pushrod engine but it was EFI-NO keys or title and he wanted 700 bucks for it.I didnt get back to him fast enough and it went to the Crusher. The car had a nice body and all the trim and lenses were still intact. The interior was clean too.Jeesh!

As everyone else mentioned, probably the Overseas Delivery Program. You supposedly get the car for a bit cheaper, but you then have to float a European vacation. (Not so terrible if you have the money... but nowadays most European currency is killing the dollar)

Sounds like you scored with respect to the headlamps:

The glass ones are indeed the (much coveted) Euro-code headlamps. Much better than the plastic North American ones, and becoming a very common (but slightly pricey) upgrade nowadays.

That car was either upgraded by a previous owner (more likely), or was imported to the US (less likely, but possible). A little research will let you know for certain.

The turn signals are indeed specific to the European headlamps. Do note that these headlamps will use an H4 bulb instead of a 9004 bulb.

    Have fun!

Tourist and diplomat sales - still possible as well as European delivery 200

There are two purchase options here. The other gents described the European delivery program. Anyone in USA can do this and it is a great way to see Europe and use you own new car. This car will be a 100% stock USA model (if you live in USA when you ordered it).

There is also a diplomat program for diplomats and employees of various international organizations. The car they order may be configured for their home country or they may never take it home. If you work for DOD or other gov. agencies, or UN, World Bank, NATO, etc., and have an official passport (the red one), you may be eligible for diplomat sales.

I think you can still do this with new Volvo's today as well. You buy a US spec car, take delivery in Sweden, use it for your vacation travels and then it is shipped to the US. You don't save any money to speak of just a service that allows you to use your new car on your vacation. Dan

Two years ago, we took overseas delivery of our XC-70. Its quite a sweet deal... here are the high level details:

1: About 8% off the sticker
2: Free round trip plane tickets and taxi service to the hotel.
3: The first nights stay in the hotel is free.
4: Plant tour with Swedish meatball lunch.
5: When the car is returned to you at your dealer, you get to keep the red and white Swedish plates that came with the car.

A word of warning, two years ago, staying a week in Gothenburg ran around $1800, "$10 for a "Big Mack" due to the exchange rate... its even WORSE now. Despite that, the trip was well worth it!

Here is a link to one of their websites covering the details:
