740 Rex Regina Drivability issue and eng Light 700 1990

I have a 745 wagon, NA with about 300k on it. It is a daily runner, but a rotting roof line from a replaced roof has her days numbered and a 940 with 180k is parked alongside and breathing down her neck. The 940 needs a few weeks work herself, so here is the scope.

After a week parked, driving to work get 1.2 miles into the trip and no power whatso ever. I can barly make her go 5 mph. I have gas, turn around, stubble along, still runningm no real back fire, rumble noise from the intake, I gat a tiny amount of power by pumping the gas, get up to 20 down hill, slows to about 5 on a slight up hill

Then, the check engin light comes on, power is back to normal, drive up a steep hill home, no problem.

Park it, pull codes 2-3-3 idle valve closed

311 signal missing from Odometer (speedometer hasent worked in almost a year, it will regester occasionally, then dead for weeks)

2-2-1 O2 sensor no operating

I ran the check on the injectors (ok), idle valve (ok), and cold injector (failed, no click) Starts cold ok though.

Any ideas? it is a rex system, so no EMM.

Eric

Regina does have a limp home mode as per my Volvo green book. It is triggered if the knock sensor is wacked, the o2 sensor is out of wack or others.

From more post mortim, it appears I had a corroded connection in the o2 sensor. Sensor gives over 12 volts when disconnected, changing the knock sensor didn't solve anything (I had one off the parts car :) )

After measuring the sensor voltage, cleared the codes again to check the source of the codes, she has run fine (after changing the knock sensor the problem returned.

The computer doesnt get concerned about the o2 sensor or knock sensor until the block is up to temp. Then if the value is out of range, she will go into limp mode and associated "divability issues" as is so nicely stated in the manuel.

I have a spare temp sensor in the car to insntly cool the engin if needed to get me home if it happens again.

So three days and 100 miles later we are still better......

    Thanks

"Limp home" seems to be a bit hit or miss with Regina.

    Didja check the O2 sensor?

The cold start injector (CSI) code may be an official fix done by Volvo that only lets the CSI fire when the starter is engaged.

    Any codes from socket #6?

There are no pin 6 codes.

Was I in limp home before the check engin light went on with zero power, or after and the computer decided to ignore a sensor like the o2?

I'm more familar with the Bosh ignition, and that o2 sensor you are not supposed to hook a standard volt meter to it as you can damage the sensor or computer (I forget which). Is the same limitation in effort for the regina, or can a cheap meter be used?

      Thanks for the help.

      Eric

I don't know how you "limp home" with a Regina system that has no air mass meter.

The Regina O2 sensors are typically quite robust. Possibly it's the wires to/from the sensor or the connector up by the RH hood hinge that is flaky.

Check this out for diagnosing the O2 sensor:

        (Look under the Regina section.)
