1998 S90 Aircond problem S90-V90 1998

Dear all,

Please help.

Got problem with my Aircond.

Sometimes, when the aircond is switch "on" I can hear that the high speed (second speed) electrical cooling fan motor works and, the aircond compressor does not turn at all..... aircond does not cool the car, only the blower is working...

Have changed the cooling fan relay, the problem seems still the same.

But most of he times, this does not happen, the electr cooling fan mottor works on the first speed and the aircond compressor just works nice and the cabin cools down.

Can anybody help?

I've got a similar problem with my V90 that is 1000 miles away at college. My parts guy says there are three switches around the compressor. One has a three prong plug, the others have two prong plugs. I ordered all three ($25, $25, and $80). My other advisor, Mr. Murphy :), told me it would be the most expensive unit that is broken. The parts guy confirmed that is what they sell the most of--and his computer says it functions both to control the cooling fan and some high pressure function.

So, how do I direct my daughter to pull and plug the right switch? I guess the 3-prong is a little larger than the others, but the parts guy says they are very similar. Moreover, since Volvo changes their parts numbers, the new ones may not match the old.

The 98 S90 has one sensor on the front, left side of the condenser (in front of the radiator). You can get at it from the front of the car easily by laying on the ground, taking the electrical connector off, using a wrench to loosen the bad sensor and screw the new one on, then reconnect the wiring clip. Fast, easy, simple, one adjustable wrench will do it.

The correct High Pressure Cut-out Sensor is Volvo P/N 9171701.

I think I should change my username to Murphy.

The car is home from college. I bought 3 switches from Swedish Engineering--the three prong one being that which they sell the most of (and the most expensive). I found the switch on the bottom passenger side of the condensor and found that the electrical connector fits my new 3-prong switch (which is a Volvo part but with a different number than DEWFPO cited--mine is 30767231--the parts guy warned me Volvo had changed numbers).

Anyway, when I started to unscrew the switch it started spewing steam, gas, freon or something clear, wet, and a little greasy. I stopped.

        Any ideas?

There's a schraeder type (tire air) valve behind the sensor. When you unscrew it, it will normally let out a PPFFTTT sound as the valve is allowed to close when the sensor is removed. It should stop immediately upon removal of the sensor. If it didn't, the valve must be stuck open.

I suspect the valve is stuck open. I never got the sensor all the way off, but it spewed more and more as I loosened it a couple of short turns so I closed it back down.

Is the freon hazzardous to me or just to the atmosphere? Should it be sucked out to replace the valve?

Am thinking the next step is to a professional mechanic to replace the valve behind the sensor and to recharge the system.

I had a similar problem on my 940. When I unscrewed the connector, I was actually unscrewing the schraeder (sp?) valve from the condenser. You might check and see if the valve is coming out with the connector, and if it is, then try to hold the valve while removing the connector.

Thanks Marlin. I am sure I'm only removing the sensor. I loosened the schraeder valve once and it spewed from behind it. I'm pretty sure that check valve is stuck and am inclinced to take it to a pro, since that valve will probably need replacing and I've already lost some freon.

R134a Is hazardous to you (I believe it can blind) and to the environment. I would give it one more shot. Try removing it quickly, not slowly. If, when you have the sensor completely removed, it it still leaking, then screw it back in immediately. Wear good good eye protection and don't breathe in the vapor if you see any.

You do not say what mileage you have on the clock. If the high pressure switch does not solve the problem, you might check the operation of the compressor clutch, which can wear after 70000mls so that the clutch gap is to big and will not pull in. This may show up as the engine and compressor warm up. I think that the clutch gap should be about 0.04inch. To check this, when the air con fails and should be working, with a long stick carefully give the end of the compressor clutch a tap. If it clicks in, that may be the problem.
I do not know the layout of the S90, but I guess that it is similar to my V70, where the compressor is at the bottom of the serpentine belt. A new compressor is expensive and for a few hours work it is possible to adjust the clutch gap without removing the compressor from the car or disconnecting the hoses. You will find instructions on the VOC website, or I will post them if required.

If I understand you correctly, it seems the high pressure switch is failing.
Located behind the grill on the lower left of the condensor. Not sure which one is acting up on you. But I'll bet it is one of those.

I believe, though I have never done it, they just screw off, there is a valve like a tire air stem to keep the a/c coolant from coming out.

      Hi DanR.

I have replaced the presurre switch two days ago and, it works alright.

Aircond now cools the car properly.

      Thanks for the advise.

      All best
      Edmond

From what you describe, I too would support DanR's hi-pressure switch diagnosis. The switch is not expensive and just screws off and on, no R134a is lost so it is very easy to replace.
