A friend of mine got a V6 740 as a first car for his son. I looked into it to learn what I could.
General advice here on brickboard is to run away as fast as you can from any Volvo V6. Issues with lubrication to somewhere in the head and I think also to the timing chain system - I don't recall all the details. Nasty failures and way too many of them.
What I DO recall reading is that they did a substantial redesign for the '87 or '88 model year. Why would you care, with your '76? Because you might have a later version of the engine already swapped in. There were so many problems with the original, many of these cars have other engines swapped in by now.
My readings claimed that the V6 redesign was a good one. So if you have a 'new' type swapped in, you might trust it. Trouble was, the V6 already had such a bad reputation that they just couldn't sell it even after redesign. They did better with the turbo, and later Volvo worked out other engines to produce more power (but none as reliable as the good old red block).
The original was an 'odd fire' design. It's a V8 crankshaft with two cylinders not there. On the original odd fire V6 if you look at the distributor cap you'll see three pairs of two spark wire terminals. That is, not evenly spaced around the circle. The redesign was an 'even fire' arrangement and the plug wire connectors will be evenly spaced around the circle.
