6V to 12V question - fuel level sender 444-544

I'm converting my car from 6V to 12V. I have a 12V wiper and fan motor, need to change all my light bulbs, planning on using a 12V fuel gauge, but was wondering if the 6V fuel level sender needs to be changed to a 12V style?

If it needs to be changed, is there a voltage stablizer or something that can be used with the 6V gas gauge?

Paul

    6V to 12V question - fuel level sender 444-544

    Hello,

    The fuel level senders are the same for 6v and 12v cars, but you do have to change the gauge to a 12v unit as you have surmised.

      6V to 12V question - fuel level sender 444-544

      Guys;

      My tests showed that the guage is quite forgiving of operating voltage with the indicating difference of a gauge operated on 12V and 6V being only the width of the needle, but even this could be corrected by adding an 82 Ohm resistor.

      Voltage stabilizer/regulator is not necessary.

      See: http://sw-em.com/Vintage_Volvo_6V_to12V_conversion.htm

      Cheers

          6V to 12V question - fuel level sender 444-544

          cJust enjoy the fact that you actually have a fuel tank level system that works!

          Mine didn't work when I got the car, and looking through the PO's receipts I saw where she was charged $85 for a new sender, so I just assumed that port was working.

          Silly me! After I bought and installed a new gauge and set up a separate wire to the trunk just in case the wiring was faulty, the gauge still didn't work.

          I then pulled the 'new' sending unit and discovered that it had fresh paint on the top, so it looked new, but the guts had been ripped out.

          Even now, it's like the speedometer - a guess - that you hope is somewhere close to the actual reading!

          Good luck with your car!
