I want to mount 6x9's in my 90 240 for more base! 200

Do you simply cut the holes in the back pannel below the rear glass? Or should I build boxes for them then mount them in the rear? Perhaps in the doors? Will it sound good mounted in the doors?

My thoughts:

If you look at the Metal under the Rear Deck you will see that there is a lot of metal missing. Cutting it to fit 6x9's will almost leave hanging metal.

I went with building separate boxes I thought that the boxes would help face the Sound to me instead of up into the rear Window.

PC Richard sells 6 x 9 boxes if you don't want to build your own.

I was able to install 6x9's in the rear shelf of my '82 240.I drew the pattern on 2 sheets of metal & cut out the right size for the speakers. I riveted the mateal onto the rear shelf after removing the liner & cut out any sheet meatal that was left in the new holes.I do not believe this ever compromised the structural integrity.

I installed 6x9's in the rear of my '90 wagon. I removed the panels and jig sawed the holes on my work bench. Mounting screws directly into the panels. Pulled wires from the rear door speakers. I'm not too happy with the result. I used cheap speakers and it is so far from there to the drivers seat, so I reley on the front speakers (good quality). It is very do-able. Good luck.

if i remember correctly the stock holes in the rear shelf are big enough to fit 6x9's. you just have to drill holes for the bolts, you might have to open the hole a bit but it's been along time since i had a 240 sedan.

My recollection on an 89 and 90 was that the rear hat shelf had NO provisions for speakers. This means that if you want to install 6X9s back there, you will have to cut out structural sheetmetal. The only provisions Volvo made for rear speakers were the rear doors... but there is by no means enough space in them to fit the big fat speakers.

If you do decide to structurally compromise the safety of the rear passenger compartment by cutting into the hat shelf, I recommend building a box around the trunk/back side of the speakers, this will vastly improve bass reflex performance. The speakers should be flush mounted on the inside.

I mounted 4x6 Pioneers in the rear deck of my 89 240 sedan, and they just barely fit into one of the openings on the sheet metal. Sound is not so bad, but read on. 6x9 will require cutting.

No matter what size, though, there is a much lower limit to the bass you can push without distortion due to cross talking across the fiberboard decking. Without some serious isolation structure to separate the speakers from the deck, I think that you'd never get to use the bass capabilities of a larger speaker.

Which is fine with me, because, as I may have mentioned in the past, I want the tunes to be loud enough to hide the pistons slapping, but not so loud that parts start falling off my 19 year old car.
