Hello,
Finally reached time to change my synthetic motor oil and replaced that $6 piece of junk made in India mount on the passengers side of the car (installed another Meyle mount). I will post a picture later this week of what the $6 Motor mount looks like since installed in August (not good at all). Also checked up on a BB inspired experiment on the driver side mount.
Read BB conversations about stopping oil from degrading the rubber in the motor mounts. Decided the idea about putting tape on the motor mount before installing sounded like a good idea so tried it one installed in September 2007. Used a good grade electrical tape (3M) and put two full wraps on the surface of the part. That side of the car did have a steady power steering leak (just fixed) that went from being a couple of steady drips, to suddenly a bottle of fluid on Thursday of last week to get work and home. That leak spread a generous amount of fluid down that side of the engine. Under the tape the mount was still oil free!. Did not take the entire mount off, just removed a section of tape off the surface, inspected it, and replaced the tape.
On the new mount used on the passenger side, went a step further and added two layers of tape on the top side with strips 90 degrees to each other. Then put two full wraps of tape down the side of the mount.
Plan to use the garbage bag trick when pulling the oil filter off. Next oil change will check up on condition of the tape and the mount. But have decent hopes that this will help extend the parts life.
Regards,
Paul
