HEPU water pump failing 200

I installed a HEPU pump on our '88 240 a year ago (approximately 5,000 miles) and it is beginning to hum at the bearing. Is this just a fluke or is there a better pump to try next time?

    could it be the timing belt tensioner failing? I have seen many of those make noise,but very few noisy pumps.Just a thought,Bill

    I'd have to agree that belt tension is a killer. Since I started watching my belt tension, I have not replaced a water pump and that has been a hell of a long time on my cars.

    The concensus on this board is 'thumbs up' for HEPU. And there's the matter of belt tension .... 200

    HEPU always gets thumbs up on this board. Additionally, I found that the original pumps on my cars were all HEPU, whereas the replacement pumps sold at Volvo dealership parts counters are not HEPU. Given it takes so long* to wear out the OEM pumps, to me these are strong arguments to stick with HEPU.

    [ * I'm still on the original on my '84 with 224,000 miles which always got new antifreeze every other year, although I have changed them both on my two '93s that I bought more recently.]

    About your disappointment with your HEPU, there's a notorious caveat -- you can easily and quickly ruin the bearings of any water pump if you have too much belt tension on it. And, IMHO, there's a fine line between too little and too much -- you really have to observe the tightening criteria in your green book, and if you find that the belts are still noisy or slipping, instead of tightening it further (assuming it seems to be tightened properly), you should just consider replacing the belts with new ones, something a lot easier than replacing a prematurely failing pump.

      Interesting. What evidence is there that OEM pumps used to be manufactured by Hepu? Are they stamped Hepu in the casting? No point of manufacture marked on my original water pump on the '90 245. Granted the Hepu pump impeller *looks* more like the original pumps than the new Volvo replacements.

      The pumps definitely have changed over the years. The original pump on my '90 was a big heavy thing. The blue box replacement was a bit less so. Impeller is different as well.

      I have heard several cases of Hepu's blowing bearings occasionally within a year of installation, and by people who don't overtighten belts, so it does happen, though not that often.

    How tight are your belts? Excessive tension could ruin the water pump bearing and cause the problem you're describing.

    Bummer.
    My opinion, as I've just installed my second Hepu pump (first was in another vehicle, last one in my current '89 245), is that this would be a fluke.

    I'll bet you could install ten more and they would run perfect.

    I did research on the BB before I put one in my 245, and I found so many people that gave the thumbs up to this one.

      Hepu pumps are a decent option to installing a factory Volvo pump. I've never seen any indicator on a factory pump as to who makes them, and I have probably installed a few hundred of them over the years, but the casting did change quite a bit when Ford took over and they started coming with the "Made in England" sticker as opposed to the "Made in Sweden" one. I would be very hard pressed to believe that Hepu ever supplied Volvo with water pumps. If you want a better pump then spend the money and buy a factory Volvo pump. While belt tension is important I have not found it to be overly critical in pump bearing longevity and would have to say that your premature bearing failure is not in line with the performance that I have seen from other Hepu pumps, but as I said, if you want a better pump buy the factory one.

        I have one that I brought about 4 years ago, still on the shelf in my garage. It was for one of my many 88-91 740 wagons(avg 300-500,000 plus original miles). I actually applied the gas tank patch seal/puddy to the (inner/back) pulley (exterior) of the pump and it continued to hold for well over 60,000 miles! The car had over 500,000 original miles when I donated it (very robust). The rear-end had went bad, because of a bad gas leak, that I had fixed (fuel pump line), but the gas had already erroded the diff seal and caused the diff oil to, well the rest is history. However, the Hepu pump that I have is stamped "made in Germany." I purchased the pump from FCP Groton. Now since my recent purchase,a 1989 240/244 153,000 plus original miles (non-turbo)sedan just started slowly leaking from behind the pulley, this pump is right on time!
