rev limit 900 1995

got a 95' 940 2.3 full turbo. backfired one day then later that day rev counter shot down very fast like a limiter was put on it but for a fraction of a second. car would then not rev past 1500 rpm while cold but couple of times round the block and it would warm up to the point of being able to drive normally but still it would not rev past 3000 rpm. went on for a month (telling myself i will get round to placing in garage for repair) then the condition deteriated to the point of not being able to rev past 800 rpm while cold and not past 1500 rpm even when warm. limped it to a garage who tested the ecu which was fine while the car was idling in garage, the mechanic reported that the exhaust was literally glowing red hot after 15 minutes of idling. took it to volvo dealers in liverpool who did a compression test and showed me a IVEKA compression test chart which showed a 6 bar reading for cylinder number 1, 7.5 bar for cyl2, 8.3 bar for cyl 3, 9.5 bar for cyl 4. he came up with an elaborate theory that cylinder 1 coolant reservoirs had corroded to the point of bursting the head gasket and the air, fuel etc was escaping around the system giving the mass air flow meter faulty readings which was then not giving the right mixture. this theory has been debunked by a non franchise specialist in st. helens who also refuses to look at the car for being too much trouble. i am being told that it is a sensor somewhere that is causing this problem, i have in the meantime aquired a temp gauge sensor and mass airflow meter from a breakers which has not made the slightest difference. i have studied the faq in the 940 section about the various sensors and havent found symptoms which resemble mine. i am praying that someone out there has an answer for me as i am really attached to this car, and having replaced, brakes, exhaust, shocks etc was hoping for the long haul ( i was even contemplating a replacement engine, until specialist told me this was not the problem) anyways hope someone has an answer for me thanks.

Make sure the timing belt hasn't jumped a couple of teeth. Incorrect cam timing can cause an inability to rev properly and red hot exhaust manifold.

What if the used Air Mass Meter you bought is also bad?
Just take the hit and be sure with a new one. (or at least try it on another car.) Really, wouldn't it be a nice solution?

Please pull off the valve cover and inspect the valve springs. A broken spring will do just that, plus make a mess of compression readings.
My initial thought was that the intake was loose, but that would not make for a poor idle.

Hi, It might well be the knock sensor which is located under the inlet manifold and bolted to the block. This will retard the ignition, which will result in less performance, it may well pink, and another effect because the spark is retarded is a glowing exhaust manifold!! Hope this helps ?

    hi
sounds someways familiar. very hot exchaust and very bad rev-up about the same as yours. had to replace AMM...the actual car was 1987 Volvo 480 with Bosch Fuel Injection...

hi the car wont rev at all, was this the same for you? if i press the accelerator too much it strangles the engine and cuts out. i have just put another air flow meter from a breakers assuming it is working it made no difference. if the engine warms up a little i can crawl along but it still wont rev above 1500 rpm.

I'm not familiar with bar reading for compression only psi. but if your compression is bad that’s not good. One sign of a blown head is oil or exhaust in coolant. I would check air fuel & spark. Disconnect IAC see what happens. Did you mess with you TPS. You car also has a crank position sensor. I never had a car that has one but you may want to look into that as well.
