'95 960 rough idle/somewhat down on power 900

I have a '95 960 with a rough-loping idle and is somewhat down on power during acceleration. Last week I had a 212 code so I replaced the O2 sensor, which initially smoothed out the idle as well as cleared the code. Unfortunately, on the way to work this AM, another code (221) appeared. I removed and cleaned the AMM, which cleared the code (although the loping idle is beginning to gradually reappear). The car does not show a new code as yet. Should I wait for another code to appear, or is there something else to check? Thanks, Jim

    MAF 900

Hi, my 95 960 did just this last year. After much toil, it turned out to be a bad MAF. If you have a friend with a 960, try swapping a working MAF in to see if this clears it up. It will show imediately. Good luck.

I finally had a chance to work on the car again today. Since I have 2 '95 960's, I just swaped the AMM out, and immediately the problem was resolved. Also, just to confirm, I hooked the (suspected) bad AMM up in the "good" car, instantly duplicating the rough running condition. Glad I was able to escape with an easy solution; I was dreading the possibility of doing the intake gasket. Thanks to all for the help. Jim

An intake manifold gasket leak, a bad vacuum leak somewhere in the system.

Worn spark plugs, a bad coil or two, a bad injector. The flap door in the air intake is positioned to only take air from the hot exhaust manifold. A crack in the rubber ducting of the air intake.

Does it idle better when first started?

When you first start the car, the idle is so smooth that you have to practically listen or look at the tach to know it's running. After about 20-30 seconds, the idle inconsistency begins again. Can you do the old "spray carb cleaner on the intake gasket" trick to test for leaks? Thanks, Jim

By the way, is it possible that I fried the catalytic converter last week when the O2 sensor went south (it is the original with 198,000 miles)?

Thats classic intake gasket symptom--when you first crank the engine is running richer after a little while as she starts to warm up it gets leaner-then the leak around the intake gasket starts to really show up---
          Hope that helps

A big +1 on what DanR told you--the intake gasket on your model was upgraded to a better material after 97--your gasket is red and the newer one is green--
Try taking a propane tourch and just turn on the gas and point the tip to where the intake maniflod joins the head on the #1 cylinder while its at idle-thats the place they start to leak more often
      Hope that helps
