Help! Distributor OOPS! 120-130 1967

Rookie error! I took out my distributor (unbolted it, the two bolts attaching it to the engine block) to clean it up/replace the condenser/points inside (where it was warm), but didn't set it to #1TDC first, etc...is there any way to "reset" it, back to where it was before?

Thanks!

I've read the other posts, and while they all have merit, no one tied the whole process together. The distributor drive is offset and can only engage the drive gear in one position, so even if the motor has been turned (compression test?), the distributor will be in proper relation when it is set back in place. The only danger with removing the aluminum distributor mount is that the drive gear could get lifted out of position while cranking--but that's a remote possibility. Take a screwdriver and push down on the gear to be sure. I've always serviced distributors on the bench, but remove it by loosening the pinch bolt. Assuming things have been kept original number 1 should face forward, angled towards the block -- 3,4,and 2 counterclockwise from 1--you'll find a slash on the upper ridge of the distributor indicating number one. If your distributor has a vacuum unit it usually sits towards the firewall about a fingers width from the block.

I am reluctant to disagree with all the other guys who have posted, BUT:

If you have not turned the engine, DON'T!! The distributor only fits one way
so put the distributor back down where it was and turn the rotor until the dogs
on the drive fall into place and it SHOULD be close enough to start so you can
properly set the ignition timing. That is assuming you didn't pull the oil
pump/distributor drive gear out or remove the distributor from the aluminum base.

Yea... I'm with you 100% George...

No need to mark TDC or anything... as long as the approximate location of the vacuum booster (or any given plug wire or the oiler) is known.. just drop it back in in that approximate location, and twist the rotor til it falls in...

I always pulled the distributor to do an ignition tune up... or even at the car wash to wash the motor... quicker and easier that way

Matt,

what's the process for safely washing the engine? I've been wanting to do this, but didn't want to screw anything up...

Thanks!bg

bg;

...other poster has said it...but just in case you need a bit more detail (so that you get it at TDC #1 and not #4), see: http://www.sw-em.com/Volvo%20Ignition%20from%20Scratch.htm

Cheers

Bring the #1 piston up to top dead center. Point the rotor to the #1 cyl on the distributor cap. Reinstall.

Just make sure you are on the compression stroke. Otherwise you will be off 180 degrees.
