how to remove a stuck rpm sensor? 200 1990

thanks to the great writeup by Ryan_R, i've been able to remove the bolt that holds in the rpm sensor (5 minutes and most of that was to get the right tools out).

however, no matter what i've tried, i can't get the sensor out!

i had a little wiggle room to start, but couldn't get anywhere, and so sprayed it with pb blaster, and lost what wiggle room i had.

it's cold and snowy here in western ny, if that makes any difference...

my friend broke the bracket it sits in on his, and i don't want to make that same mistake, because now he has to drop the transmission...

i'm at the point where it's costing me a good bit to not have junior on the road... any last suggestions before i get it towed?

thanks!

Maybe a little careful heat-gun application? With temps cold things will shrink so the heat will help expand stuff and also maybe allow the penetrant (hope you used something better than WD-40)to get into the joint.

I just did mine on an '89. It wqs the first time and mine came right out, no issues.

I wonder if a Hair dryer to warm up the metal bracket and make the Plastic Sensor more flexible will help.

Sorry, just tossing an idea out there

I have successfully used the method described by yama, but I think it was about a 19mm to span the width of the sensor.

Similar to others - I used some channel-loc pliers to grip the base and wiggle back and forth while using some mole-grips to grab the top of the sensor body and pull up. When I replaced it in my 1990, it was stuck for a couple of days. In my '92, the sensor came out in about five minutes with little trouble. Don't imagine it is much more fun in the cold of winter.

      Best of luck -
      Zach

I was working from the passenger's side of the engine bay. Note that my car lacks EGR and hasn't been upgraded from the original R12 AC system (no need - in AK).

ah... i have ac, and there's not even enough room to swing a hammer to tap the 12 mm end wrench on

well, tow truck was called at 1:30, they hadn't showed up by 3, they hadn't showed up by 4, and i canceled them at 5, so i'll deal with it on thursday...
            thanks for the suggestions!

I had a heck of a time getting out an orginal speed sensor on my 1990 last year. What finally worked from was to get a 12mm wrench(I think this was the size)on the base of the sensor and wiggled it back and forth several times until it came out. I accessed it from the left side of the engine as opposed to the top.
