Cause of ead battery 200

I have a 1992 245 wagon and bought a new battery for it about 2 months ago. It has been sitting for a couple of weeks and yesterday when I turned on the ignition I heard nothing. I then jumped it and my wife drove it around for about 10 minutes. This morning it wouldn't start again so I gave it a quick charge and it started. I let it run for 10 minutes or so and 7 hours later it wouldn't start again.

Do you have any idea what could cause this or what to check for? It's hard to believe the battery is bad but it's a die hard so I have a good warranty. What would you job?

    Do your power locks work?

This is a common "dead battery" issue. The power locks short, and pull power from the battery over night. Result? A dead battery in the morning.

A couple of ways to take care of this problem, if it is the case:

Remove the Power Lock Relays (behind center dash vents, easy to get to.) You won't have power locks any more but your battery won't die.

Disconnect the power lock switch (it's right above the felt pad that goes above the driver's legs, it's a white connector with 3 wires.) Again, you won't have power locks but you'll have a good battery.

Or, you can replace the power lock switch and hope it solves the problem.

That said, 10 minutes is not nearly enough time to give a battery a good charge. You need to run the car for AT LEAST 30 minutes. An hour would be better.

You don't know if it's the battery or a non-battery fault in another component which drains the battery. You also don't know if the alternator is charging...but the lack of a warning light suggests that it is. If the battery's wholly flat, running the car for 10 minutes isn't going to give it a substantial charge.

You might remove or at least disconnect the battery, put it on a charger, charge it up, then let it stand overnight. Reinstall. If it cranks, then the battery's good and there's some kind of electrical leak in the wiring which is draining the battery.

Then you have to find out where the juice is going. I'd start by connecting a meter or a test light in series with the installed battery, to see if current's flowing when everything's turned off. If it is - beyond the really small amount of juice needed by the clock - you have to find out where. Start by removing the fuses, one by one. If, when removing a fuse, the leakage current drops to zero or near it, you can conclude that something connected to the circuit on that fuse is permitting the leakage.

dbrick's right - Please note, as he pointed out...

Never having driven the new battery more than 10 minutes, it possibly never had a full charge yet. Some retail stores will fully charge their batteries if time allows, but it's just as possible you'd get one that wasn't fully charged when new.

I'd be fine charging it in or out of the car, or jump starting it and going for a good long drive, like an hour. That should get a substantial charge into it.

A voltmeter costing $10 at a big box store will tell you plenty about whether the alternator is charging or not. Also will tell you if the battery is losing charge overnight.
