How to test rear window wiper motor? 200 1990

Not working. Fuse is good. Probably the motor. I have 3 or 4 wiper motors laying around, they may all be bad, I don't even remember which cars I took them from. Can I test them directly from a battery or will that blow them out? Obviously I'm pretty ignorant about wiring issues. Thanks for the help.

If you're testing electrical, it is prudent to have a multimeter and learn how to apply it. It saves having to make DIY testing equipment. I concur with checking the wiring at the hinges, I have a '85 240 dl, and have had to replace/repair the wiring at the hinges many times. You can look at the gap in hinges when the hatch is closed and see if there is a break. That is the most common issue.

Although I had noticed the delay mode never worked on the rear and after the front started giving me trouble, I replaced the relay (under the carpet to the left of the brake on the floor) and now both wipers work as they should.

Expect that most problems are caused by simple reasons, and check those first before delving into more complex ones. Typically, the rear wiper stops because the wiring is broken after opening/closing the hatch so many times.

Good Luck,

Breadman

This is my first attempt at uploading a pix and hope it works.
This pix shows a jumper wire which I use for testing parts with 12v, for shorting relay contacts, etc. Alligator clips at each end. An in-line fuse and a switch completes the jumper. It's important to have a fuse or you risk arcs and sparks.

Excellent. What size fuse do you use?

I think I have a 3 amp fuse installed at present. I used a 3AG fuse holder and it will accept any fuse from 1/32 amp to 35 amp.

If it blows one fuse, just put a bigger fuse in ;-).

are you sure the wires are not broken at the tailgate hinge?

if you are worried about frying the motor, connect an 8A in line fuse on the hot side.

Good point about the tailgate wires, didn't think to check - I'll check them.

Turn it on and open the tail gate and see if it moves at some point. Dave.
