I'm ever so close to getting the 240 out of the carport. Just need to get the old lower U-joint on the steering column off. I've tried all sorts of stuff. Penetrating oil, screwing progressively larger screws into the "slot" on each end. I even hacksawed (oh, was that fun!) it in half so I could work on each half ndependently.
It's only very slightly loose, but not really budging. Any thoughts, or other tricks?
Thanks!

Do not allow steering column to turn while shaft is off, contact reel for SRS will be destroyed.$150 or more for that part. Bill

Good call! Everything has been locked in place and marked with whiteout so it all will go back the same. Back on the job tomorrow!
Thanks!

Hi Ryan,
Once a long time ago i seem to recall having this same problem. I used a long(2' - 3') 3/8 extension and working from above put the extension on the top of the u-joint and slammed the extension with a hammer to work the u-joint loose after much spaying with penetraiting oil and attempting to widen the split with a big scewdriver. Hope this helps.

This is my technique as well.

Thanks! Bonking rusted parts with a BFH really seems to help break rusty bonds. I've had lots of luck elsewhere. Should try it here.

Thanks Dan,
That's my next step it seems. Do you know if there's any chance of damaging the input shaft to the steering rack with a few well placed bonks?
Thanks again!

Hi again Ryan,
i don't recall any ill effects from my banging the bejeesus out of my stuck steering u- joint. was a while ago but worked out fine.

Well,
I got the lower half off the rack by banging the snot out of it from under the car, above and through the front side of the crossmember. Sweet watching it sail gracefully through the air as it finally popped off. The splines are in AOK shape, too!
"All that remains" is the top half of the u-joint on the steering shaft. Not enough room to get a torch in there as I had hoped: brake junction box on one side, clutch cable on the other. I think I'm going to try a gear puller to yank it off, as air tools are out of the picture... and there's not much to bang it against in the other direction.
Is there a risk of damaging the steering column or upper U-jount from banging (axially) on the the steering shaft in either direction?
Thanks!... and Happy Turkey Day!

So the u-joint is kaput? That increases your possibilities.
Jorrell's caution certainly applies so long as the bottom of the u-joint is mounted to the steering box.
If not, then maybe heating the parts of the u-joint very hot with a torch will break the chemical bonds in the aluminum/steel junk that has fused those parts to the steering column.
Once the u-joint is off, clean up the splines on the column with a wire brush and then a dremel disk in the grooves, and use never-seize when you install the expensive new u-joint.

With the U-joint sawed in half, I have a feeling I can whack-bonk the half on the rack to freedom.
Do you think it's worth (or dangerous) MAPP torching the end on the steering column? Fortunately, aluminum expands more than steel.
This is an SRS car. Is there any chance damaging air bag stuff using heat and force on the steering column? I wonder if it's worth removing that section of steering column from the car (via upper U-joint)...
Thanks again,

Indeed, the old U-joint is kaput. So whatever it takes!
Thanks!

Unbolt the two U-bolts that hold the rack to the cross member (15mm deep well socket), this will give a bit of slop. No need to disconnect tie rods, the whole idea is to increase "degrees" of freedom.
If that doesn't help, dremel tool with cutoff wheel or an air chisel will be your friend. Whatever you do, do NOT apply a torch to the lower U-joint, the heat will melt the shaft seal in the rack.

Thanks!
The U-joint was toast, and I cut it in half, so there's plenty of freedom. :)
Just have to break the rusty bond, I guess.
Would using a puller on the separate parts be a bad idea? Of course, the steering column is hollow, so it wouldn't work there.
Thanks again!

Chisel or air chisel... final answer.... In this case, shock and vibration will hopefully break the electrolysis bond loose.
Be mindful to not damage the shafts and their splines, don't ask me how I know, but it took me 8 hours to correct that one "itty bitty" slip of the chisel.

Thanks, Jorrell...
Hopefully the chisel and BFH will prevail!
