1992 245 rear light fuction 200 1992

Hellow all,

I have a question about the rear lights on my wagon, does the p,s top section have a function? The bottom sections on both lights function as tail/brake lights, the d,s top is the fog light. Should the p,s and d,s top function as tail lights under normal lighting conditions?

Thanks

    JB945t covered it pretty well.

In 1986, when the high-level brake light was required, Volvo, in its infinite wisdom, changed some of the low-level brake lights into rear fog lights.

Both my 1986 244 and 1988 244 have rear fogs on both sides. Later came a Euro-code requirement that only one side have a fog, to avoid having the following driver think they were brake lights.

The idea of converting the blank and the "good" lights into additional running lights is a good one, IMHO. If, of course, one lives where fog is a rarity. Best to use the bulb holders and the 5W bulbs, the 21W fog bulb gets hot enough to damage the lens after a while.

The point made that the operating fog indicates which is the driver's side is new to me - hmmm. I thought it was just cheaper.

If you don't have an Owner's Manual they might still be available at Ken Cook Publishing. Call 1-800-25-VOLVO, or visit www.volvotechinfo.com

    Good Luck,

    Bob

No the p/s top doesnt really have a function, at least not here in the U.S.
The rear fog on the drivers side is supposed to show what side the driver is on, I guess somewhat important across the pond where your more likley to have some right hand drive mixed in with thier normal left hand drive cars, and where the average guy behind you might know thats what it means, or that its a foglight in the first place.
Here in the midwest most folks dont know anything about a "rear foglight" and are more likley to think that I'm an idiot that rides the brake pedal going down the highway so much that I burned out my p/s bulb.
In my 940 what I did was got another 2 connecter bulb socket, jumped power from the drivers side over to the pass side, installed a couple #67 bulbs(because they are similar wattage to your taillights) and run them as additional running lights.

I lost the extra bright foglight feature that I rarly ever used, and now have 4 running lights out back that I use all the time

Thanks guys for the info, modifying the top positions sounds like a good idea. I just might follow up on that.

My '89 has both side operating as Fogs. I think in '91 they only use the one side. Should be easy to tap a wire into it and run it to the passenger side. The Bulb Out Sensor is not in the circuit..no worries there.

On my car ( sedan) I added some diodes in the right spot. when I step on the brake, my brake lenses as well as my Fog lenses illuminate. The Fogs also work correctly when turning them on.
You can make this modification up by the Bulb out sensor. Not sure about '92 buy in '89 the Bulb out sensor is very close to teh Fog light Switch, it wires up very clean.
