Sunroof switch removal 900

Hello All:
Now that it's getting cooler, I thought I'd tackle my sunroof problem on my 97 960 Wagon. It won't open. No whine, no clicks, nada. I was told to check the switch in the dash first to see if it was still any good before moving on to the more expensive motor problem located beneath the overhead panel. I have removed the cowling below the sterring wheel and the metal knee plate, have stuck my head up in there and seen the switch. I put my hands on it but don't know how to remove it. Resisting the tempation to yank on it, i thought i'd write in and ask if there was a right way to get it out. Also, after i get it out, how do i test it?
Thanks much.
Karl

I had a similar problem on my 780. I think 900 and 700s are basically the same.

If so, take off the plastic cover inside the car, on the roof near your windshield. There is a little whole into which you can insert a flat headed screwdriver. The screw is actually a mechanism to manually open your sunroof. Now, if you turn the screwdriver at same time as you push on your sun roof button, you will see if it works or not.

Generally, the switches can be corroded inside. You might want to take it off and open it to clean it up, making sure the contact is well done between the switch itself and the electric core.

If this doesnt work out, then your sunroof motor has a problem. Go in a scrapyard and find yourself one on a 700-900 from 1983 and up (all 700s fit into a 700, I guess they will into a 900, not sure though) and install it in your car, which is really not difficult operation.

Thanks.I checked the switch and it looked clean, but that doesn't mean it works. I took it to the local Volvo mechanic and to test it he said he'd have to look up the codes, etc., a half hour of labor, so i told him to forget it. He did say that as he has changed out 50 motors for every switch, he'd guess my problem was the motor. I'll check that next.

just push on it from the back, so it will pop out towards the front seats. The fastest way to test is just grab one from a junkyard and see if it works.

Thanks. It popped right out just like you said. I think the problem is not the switch, however. Going to check the motor first weekend i get.
