Gas Smell inside car 900 1997

On my wifes 1997 960 wagon she has been smelling a strong gasoline odor in the mornings. Once the car has been a few miles it is no longer a problem the rest of the day. Thought perhaps it was the seal around the gas tank module or maybe even the fuel filler neck. Had a local shop pump smoke into the gas tank and filler neck but found no leaks. The shop also checked the pressed in plugs on the fuel rail and found no leaks. Not sure what else to check. The smell seems to enter into the car through the dash vents. Anyone run into this before? Need help and thanks for any insight.
Andy

Thanks for the reply the car is still at the shop this morning so I will call and make sure he checks the fuel rail again while the car is still cool.

If it occurs only in the mornings, I would suspect the fuel rail is leaking. It's a known problem with these cars. The plug at the end of the rail leaks gasoline when cold. Heat expansion then seals the leak. The only fix is to replace the fuel rail. You can verify this by watching the fuel rail when it first starts when cold. You'll see the fuel spraying from the plug on the end.

This is a dangerous condition and should not be ignored for your wife's safety. More info at:
