Another timing belt change question 200

Hi,

I'm doing the timing belt on my '90 240 as well. It has over 100,000 on the clock so I'm going to change the tensioner and all three oil seals as well. I have the crank hold tool, #9995284 on order. I have two questions.

1. I can hold the crankshaft still with the new tool, but how do you hold the camshaft and intermediate shafts still when torqueing their bolts after putting the belt sprockets back on? Use the old belt?

2. I do not have the Volvo tools to force the new seals in. I was going to carefully use a piece of pipe or pipe junction, a block of wood and a hammer. Does anyone have any suggestions of what diameter pipe for what seal? Any other seal installation ideas?

Thank you,

Mark

Another timing belt change question 200

Here's a blow-by-blow from a New Zealander with no special tools.

http://www.volvoadventures.com/howtodocambelt.html

This brilliant guy broke the camshaft and intermediate shaft bolts loose before he removed the old belt. Elegant!

Your new tool will hold the camshaft and its sprocket immovable and the old belt toothed to it will hold the other two sprockets immovable while you do that.

After the new seals are in, use the same set-up (with the old belt) to get all three of the bolts tightened, then install the new belt, taking care this time to get all the marks properly aligned.

Lots more in his narrative.

Another timing belt change question 200

1. You can use the new belt to aid in how to line up everything. Also, look at this: http://www.threefattigers.com/Protocore/Volvo/TimingMarks.htm

2. When I did seals recently I got all the proper PVC pipes for pressing in new seals, but wound up just coaxing the old ones out with a small flat srewdriver and working the new ones in with a wooden dowl and a hammer, tap tap tap.

Caveat when using small flat screwdriver to pull seals. 200

I was both fortunate and un-fortunate last time I did this job.

Bad luck - put a tiny scratch on the intermediate shaft when the screwdriver tip slipped. Rats! I knew a tiny scratch would leak.

Good luck - I had on hand the 400 grit emery paper to smooth out the shaft enough to remove the scratch. Took 2 hours, though.

I would still use the screwdriver again, with extreme care.

Regards,

Bob
