Identification of rebuilt rear calipers 700 1988

Hi,

I am replacing the rear calipers on my 88 765 Turbo, with rebuilt ones. When I compare the rebuilt ATE calipers with the original ones they look the same, but stamped on the end in a small circular raised area is the number 3 on the original ones. On the rebuilt ones, one caliper has the number 2 on both halves of the caliper, the other one has a 3 on one side and a 2 on the other.

Does this number have any significance? Should I be concerned about it or just go ahead and use the rebuilt calipers?

I have checked the 700 FAQ but can't seem to find any reference to this number.

Thanks,
Richard

I've never noticed that marking...but it is very common for automotive castings to have the mold cavity marked on them for troubleshooting purposes. Assuming (see the 240 forum for more on this assumption) the caliper was rebuilt properly, the caliper should work fine.

On a side note, the paint dots on new car parts (OE) usually just indicate that the part has been inspected for a specific defect. The more paint dots, the more defects that have slipped through that plant. It not always the best feeling to pop the hood of a new car and see all those witness marks.
