transmission fluid change 700

My 1990 740GL (automatic) with 200,000 miles is due for a fluid change. I have no record of the last tranny service. My question is will this cause my transmission to shift funny? I've been told by a local transmission shop that I'm on my own if I authorize this work and the tranny starts acting up. But I talked with the part's guy at the local Volvo dealership (who owns a Volvo of the same era) and he said I didn't have anything to worry about. The fluid does not appear or smell burnt and has remained on the full mark. The tranny does not leak and it shifts normal. It would make me feel better though if I had fresh fluid in the tranny.....

    transmission fluid change 700

Performed transmission drain and fill as well as the differential.
No problems at all....matter of fact it shifts a little smoother!

    Thanks all for the information!

      transmission fluid change 700

As per Volvo factory maintenance service chart:
Auto transmission fluid - replace fluid every 20,000 miles.

The FAQ's fluid flush interval probably refers to those using Mobil ATF or other synthetic fluid.

Hope this help clarify service interval.

    Agree... Flush It 700

I also encourage you to do it yourself. Most shops want to do the flush with their "transmission power-flushing machine" -- completely unnecessary! As best as I can figure, these contraptions back-flush the system so that they clear the filter. The logic is that by using one of these systems, you don't have to drop the pan and do the service properly.

Well, AW trannies don't have filters, so they don't need this "cob-job" service.

Flushing the tranny on these cars is easier and cleaner than chaning the oil. Go for it!

You're right, they don't have a filter....but....they do have a very fine mesh strainer in the oil pan.

This strainer is what became clogged on my wife's 940 and caused the tranny to start slipping.
I figure the torque converter was becoming "starved" for fluid after driving it a short distance and disengaging.
The "clog" was composed of a small amount of very fine fibre, probably from the clutches, although I believe (rather hope) it was normal wear (240K).
The fluid was dark brown, I mean really dirty.
One good sign....there were 2 magnets in the oil pan and neither had collected any metal.
I replaced the strainer and flushed the transmission and all is well (for now anyway)..

    flush it 700

I've flushed four bricks after aquiring them at between 180 and 220K miles. Never had a problem post flush evne though a couple of them had nasty brown fluid when I got them. It is really quite easy to do yourself in the driveway and I suggest you try that rather than trust it to the tranny shop which could possibly benefit from any "problem" that might arise. You will save a bunch of money on the flush besides the satisfaction of knowint it was done right.

There is a good writeup on doing it yourself in the 700/900 FAQ under "select shortcut" at the top right of this page.
